NMLS exam or Series 7

Compiled by the Sitonce editorial team from the NMLS Resource Center and the federal regulations named belowUpdated 2 min readFacts verified 4 September 2026
The short answer

The Series 7 is substantially harder: longer, broader, and covering products with far more variation. The SAFE MLO test is a moderate exam by comparison, though both carry serious regulatory content.

A comparison that comes up when somebody is choosing between financial services careers rather than between exams.

The numbers look similar. The scope does not.

Why the Series 7 is harder

Breadth of product. Options strategies alone carry more genuine complexity than the entire product section of the mortgage exam.

It also requires the Securities Industry Essentials exam first, and a sponsoring firm before you may sit it at all. The SAFE MLO test needs neither.

Which does not make this exam easy

53 percent pass it first time. Being easier than one of the harder financial licensing exams is not the same as being a formality, and candidates who read the comparison that way tend to be in the 47 percent.

If you are choosing careers

Both are relationship-driven and both pay on production. Mortgage origination is transactional - each loan is a discrete piece of work. Securities work is more about ongoing client relationships and assets under management.

The entry barrier is much lower here: no sponsoring firm required to sit, no prerequisite exam, and twenty hours of education against considerably more.

Holding both

Uncommon and possible. The compliance obligations of each are separate and both employers would need to be comfortable with the arrangement.

Common questions

Is the Series 7 harder than the NMLS exam?

Substantially. It covers far broader product territory and requires a prerequisite exam and a sponsoring firm.

Does that make the NMLS exam easy?

No. 53 percent pass first time, and treating it as a formality is how candidates end up retaking it.

Which has the lower barrier to entry?

The NMLS exam. No sponsoring firm is needed to sit it and no prerequisite exam applies.

How do the careers differ?

Mortgage origination is transactional, loan by loan. Securities work centers on ongoing client relationships and assets under management.

Can you hold both licenses?

It is possible and uncommon, with separate compliance obligations for each.
