Choosing a question bank
Judge a bank on breadth, explanations that cover every wrong option, citations, weighting to the published content outline, and whether it offers full timed mocks. Size alone tells you nothing.
Banks are marketed on question count, which is close to the least informative number available.
The five properties that matter
| Property | Why |
|---|---|
| Breadth | Enough questions that you are not re-meeting the same ones |
| Full explanations | Why each wrong option fails, not just the correct letter |
| Citations | So a disputed answer can be checked against the regulation |
| Correct weighting | Matching the published content outline, not regulation-heavy |
| Full timed mocks | The only reliable readiness measure |
Why weighting matters most
The real paper is 27 percent origination activities, 24 percent federal law, 20 percent products, 18 percent ethics and 11 percent state content.
Most banks over-represent federal law because it is the easiest material to write about. A regulation-strong candidate scores well on such a bank and meets a paper where three quarters of the questions are something else. Count tells you little.
Open one explanation. If it says the answer is C and stops, the bank teaches you that C was correct on a question you will never see again. That is true whether it holds 500 questions or 5,000.
What size does tell you
Only whether you will exhaust it. A bank you can work through twice in six weeks stops measuring anything the second time.
Beyond that threshold, more questions of the same quality add very little.
Watch for stale content
The 43 percent General QM threshold is the tell. It stopped being the standard in 2021 and it is still presented as current in a great deal of material.
Common questions
What makes a good NMLS question bank?
Breadth, explanations covering every wrong option, citations, weighting to the published outline, and full timed mocks.
Does question count matter?
Only up to the point where you would not exhaust it. Beyond that, more of the same quality adds little.
Why is weighting so important?
Most banks over-represent federal law, which is 24 percent of the real paper. A skewed bank produces a misleading score.
How do I test a bank quickly?
Open one explanation. If it stops at the correct letter, it teaches letters.
What indicates stale content?
The 43 percent General QM threshold presented as current. It was replaced in 2021.
