The examination itself is 245 minutes across four subtests, plus a scheduled 15-minute break if you sit them together. The calendar is longer: about four weeks for an essay result, at least 30 days before any retake, and one year from registering to book an appointment.
Two clocks run on this examination and only one of them responds to effort. The first is how long you sit in the chair. The second is how long you wait afterward, and it is fixed by rule regardless of how well you prepared.

That is the whole of the testing. Four hours and change, once, if everything goes right. Set against a career decision it is nothing, which is why the seat time is the wrong number to plan around.
Time on the calendar
Now the part that actually costs you months. A registration gives you one year to book an appointment. The three multiple-choice subtests are scored before you leave. The essay is rated by at least two qualified raters at standardized scoring sessions and takes about four weeks. A failed subtest waits at least 30 days from that administration before you may retake it, and only that subtest is retaken.
The scenarios below are ours, built by applying those four published rules in sequence. The department publishes the rules, not the timelines.

The essay row is the one worth staring at. Because the result takes about four weeks and the retake wait is 30 days, the two run in parallel rather than in series, so by the time you learn you failed you can usually rebook immediately. That's the one piece of good news in the structure. The bad news is that you spend each cycle unable to do anything about an outcome you cannot see.
How many sittings a real candidate makes
In 2025 the department recorded 34,252 General Knowledge subtest administrations from 10,120 unique examinees, which is 3.38 subtest sittings per person. Some of that is simply the four-subtest structure. The rest is retaking: 37.2% of candidates came back for at least one subtest, and 8,717 of those 34,252 administrations were retakes taken by 3,760 people.

The one thing that shortens this
Not studying harder. Sitting the essay first.
Everything else about this examination can be resolved in a single day, because the multiple-choice subtests report before you leave the building. The essay cannot, and its published 2025 first-attempt pass rate of 64% was the lowest of the four. Put it at the end of your plan and a failure adds a month you had not budgeted for, discovered at the worst possible moment.
The genuinely free shortcut is checking whether you need to sit at all. Rule 6A-4.0021(12) accepts qualifying GRE, SAT, ACT and CLT scores subtest by subtest, and a single SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 560 covers three of the four. Where our timeline stops
At the edge of this examination, and that is a real limit rather than a stylistic choice. The General Knowledge Test is one of three examination requirements for a Florida Professional Certificate, alongside subject area and professional education. We hold the department's documents for this test and not the certification rules governing the rest, so we have no duration for a preparation program, no duration for the other two examinations and no figure for the route end to end.
You will find "become a Florida teacher in X months" on plenty of sites. We are not going to add one. Nothing we hold supports a route-level figure, and inventing one would be the easiest and least defensible number on this site.
We are also not putting a study-hours figure on this page. How long the material takes depends on where you are starting from, and that argument belongs with the difficulty pages rather than in a timeline built out of rules. Nor do we hold any salary data for Florida teachers, so the opportunity cost of these months is a calculation only you and your district's published salary schedule can do.

How long is the FTCE General Knowledge Test?

How long does it take to get FTCE results?

How long before you can retake a failed subtest?
At least 30 days from the previous administration of that subtest, under Rule 6A-4.0021(3)(d). You retake only the failed subtest, as a fresh single-subtest registration at USD 32.50, and a passed subtest cannot be retaken at all.
How long does the whole test take end to end?
