Nothing about the General Knowledge Test favors an education degree. There is no prerequisite to sit it: no course, no degree, no supervised experience. It tests English Language Skills, Reading and Mathematics plus an essay, and a GRE score you already hold may satisfy the requirement without any sitting at all.
If your degree is in biology or accounting or history, this particular examination is not the part of the route that will trouble you. It doesn't ask about pedagogy. It asks whether you can spot a dangling modifier, read a passage and answer a question about it, and solve a linear equation.
There is no prerequisite to sit it
Anyone may register and sit the General Knowledge Test. No approved course, no degree and no supervised experience is required first. That is worth stating plainly, because a lot of route summaries imply you have to be inside a program before you can test, and you don't.
The rule names students in Florida teacher preparation programs among the people who must demonstrate mastery of general knowledge, alongside candidates for a Professional Certificate. Being inside a program is one reason to sit it. It is not a condition of sitting it.
What the four subtests are actually made of

Ten competencies and 57 skills across the three multiple-choice subtests, plus one competency and 11 skills for the essay. Read that list again and notice what is absent. Child development, classroom management, curriculum, Florida school law: none of it is here, because none of it belongs to this examination.
Your GRE score may already have done the work
This is the point that matters most to someone with a non-education degree, and it is the one most sites bury. Rule 6A-4.0021(12) accepts qualifying alternative test scores against the general knowledge requirement, subtest by subtest. If you went to graduate school in another field, you may already hold the scores.

A GRE Verbal Reasoning score of 151 covers two subtests on its own. The dates are the catch: GRE administrations count from 1 July 2015, and SAT, ACT and CLT administrations from 1 March 2016. Our full breakdown of which alternative score covers which subtest has the ACT and CLT rows too.
The scores in the rule are minimum scores that may be used to satisfy the requirement. Whether a particular score report qualifies is the Florida Department of Education's call. Take your score report to them before you conclude you are exempt.
Where a non-education degree does not help you
The general knowledge requirement is one of three examination requirements for the Professional Certificate. The other two are subject area and professional education. Whether your degree satisfies anything on that side of the route is a certification question, and we hold the examination documents rather than the certification rules, so we are not the site to answer it.
We also hold no salary data for Florida teachers. If you are weighing a career change against your current pay, we cannot help with the arithmetic and we are not going to guess at it. The district you would apply to publishes its own salary schedule.
The honest read on difficulty
The published 2025 first-attempt pass rates are 64% for the essay, 68% for English Language Skills, 78% for Reading and 71% for Mathematics. The weakest of those is the essay, and people with quantitative degrees tend to plan around Mathematics and get caught by the writing instead. If you have not written 50 minutes of continuous prose since college, that is your problem subtest. Not algebra.
Common questions
Do you need an education degree to take the FTCE General Knowledge Test?
No. There is no prerequisite at all: no approved course, no degree and no supervised experience is required before you register and sit. The rule expects students in Florida teacher preparation programs to take it, but being in one is not a condition of sitting.
Does the General Knowledge Test cover teaching methods?
No. It covers English Language Skills, Reading and Mathematics across ten competencies and 57 skills, plus an essay competency with 11 skills. Child development, classroom management and school law are not in it. Those sit with the professional education requirement instead.
Can a GRE score replace the FTCE General Knowledge Test?
Qualifying GRE scores can satisfy the requirement subtest by subtest under Rule 6A-4.0021(12). Verbal Reasoning 151 covers English Language Skills and Reading, Quantitative Reasoning 147 covers Mathematics, and Analytical Writing at a combined 4 out of 6 covers the essay. The administration must be on or after 1 July 2015.
Which subtest is hardest for someone from another field?
The published 2025 first-attempt pass rates put the essay lowest at 64%, below Mathematics at 71% and Reading at 78%. Candidates with quantitative backgrounds usually over-prepare Mathematics and under-prepare 50 minutes of continuous writing.
Will my degree count toward Florida certification?
That is a certification question rather than an examination question, and we hold the Florida Department of Education's examination documents rather than its certification rules. We will not guess at it. The department's certification office is the place to ask.
