Teaching in Florida: what the route looks like

Florida's route into a classroom runs through a certificate, and the certificate runs through examinations. The General Knowledge Test is usually the first one a candidate meets, which is why it gets treated as the gate into teaching. It isn't. It's the part of the route that checks whether you can read, write and do arithmetic, and it asks nothing at all about teaching.

Where the General Knowledge Test sits

The Florida Professional Certificate is the full teaching certificate. The General Knowledge Test is one of the examination requirements for it, alongside subject area and professional education requirements. So passing all four general knowledge subtests clears one requirement out of three, and the other two are separate examinations with their own registrations and their own fees.

That third column is doing real work. We hold the Florida Department of Education's own test structure, pass-mark and administration documents for the General Knowledge Test, and we hold the rule that governs it. We do not hold the certification rules that decide whether your degree, your coursework or your experience satisfies the rest of the route, and we are not going to summarize them from memory.

The Temporary Certificate is the part most people miss

Florida also issues a Temporary Certificate, which lets a person teach while completing outstanding requirements. What counts as outstanding, and for how long you get, is set by rule and by the district. The practical effect is that the route is not strictly sequential. You may be in a classroom before you have passed everything.

That changes how you should plan the General Knowledge Test, because studying for four subtests while teaching is a different problem from studying for four subtests while unemployed.

Check the alternative scores before you pay a fee

Rule 6A-4.0021(12) lets qualifying GRE, SAT, ACT or CLT scores satisfy the general knowledge requirement subtest by subtest. One SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 560 covers three of the four. There are cutoff dates. GRE administrations count from 1 July 2015, and SAT, ACT and CLT administrations from 1 March 2016. An older score does not qualify no matter how good it was.

What the examination part costs

The multiple-choice subtests are scored at the test center before you leave. The essay is not, and the four-week lag is the thing that decides whether you make a hiring cycle. Plan the essay first if a start date matters to you.

How much of the route this test actually is

In 2025 the department recorded 34,252 General Knowledge subtest administrations from 10,120 unique examinees, and 37.2% of candidates retook at least one subtest. The gap between those two numbers is worth understanding before you budget, and we've written up why the sittings figure is more than three times the people figure separately.

Most candidates work this route in the wrong order. They register for all four subtests, pay the USD 130, and only afterwards find out that a score they already hold would have covered two or three of them. Fifteen minutes with an old score report is worth more than the first week of studying, and we would rather you spent those fifteen minutes than the USD 130.

What we will not tell you

We hold no salary data for Florida teachers. Not a band, not a district average, not a starting figure. Every career page you will read about this route quotes one, and most of them are lifting it from an aggregator that lifted it from somewhere else. We don't publish numbers we can't check against a primary source, so there is no earnings figure anywhere in this section.

That is a real gap and we would rather name it than fill it badly. If you want a pay figure, the district you are applying to publishes its own salary schedule, and that is the only number that will actually apply to you.
