Bundle or exam only: which is right for you

Compiled by the Sitonce editorial team from the FDA Food Code and the accredited providers listed belowUpdated 3 min readFacts verified 1 September 2026
The short answer

Exam only runs USD 36 to 65 and assumes you will study independently. A training bundle runs USD 95 to 180 and buys structure. Where a state requires an approved course, the choice does not exist.

Roughly a doubling in price, and it buys structure rather than a different exam.

Four questions that settle it

  1. Does your state require an approved course? If yes, buy the bundle. The decision is made.
  2. Have you worked in a commercial kitchen? If no, buy the bundle. You need the vocabulary and the scenarios.
  3. Have you bought an online course before and finished it? If no, buy the bundle - the structure is what you are paying for.
  4. Is somebody else paying? If yes, buy the bundle. There is no reason not to.

Four noes and you are an experienced, self-directed candidate paying your own money, which is exactly who exam only is for.

What exam only actually requires of you

Eight to fifteen hours, sourced material, and the discipline to do it without anyone checking.

The material is available free and it is good: the Food Code, the provider blueprint, FDA and CDC pages. What is not free is the structure that makes you use them.

The arithmetic on failing

A retake is about USD 60 plus another proctored session. Saving fifty dollars on the bundle and then failing costs more than the bundle. That is the whole calculation, and it depends entirely on an honest assessment of whether you will study.

Prices move

Figures here were checked on 1 September 2026 against provider websites and are ranges rather than quotes. Confirm the current price before paying, and check for employer or group rates.

The middle option

Exam only plus a paid question bank. Cheaper than a full bundle, and it buys the thing that matters most - scenario practice with explanations that name the provision.

For an experienced candidate this is often the best value of the three, because reading is not the weak point and applying is.

What a bundle does not buy

An easier exam. Same eighty questions, same scaled score, same certificate.

It also does not buy attendance. An online course you do not finish is worse value than an exam you studied for properly, which is why question three above is the one to answer honestly.

Common questions

Do you need a training course before the food manager exam?

Only where your state requires an approved one - Illinois, for example. Most states accept any accredited exam with no prerequisite, so exam only is available.

How much cheaper is exam only?

Roughly half. Exam only runs USD 36 to 65 against USD 95 to 180 for a training bundle, before proctoring in either case.

Who should buy the bundle?

Anyone in a state requiring an approved course, anyone new to commercial kitchens, anyone who has bought online courses before without finishing them, and anyone whose employer is paying.

Is there a middle option?

Exam only plus a paid question bank. It is cheaper than a full bundle and buys the thing that matters most for an experienced candidate - scenario practice with proper explanations.

Does a bundle make the exam easier?

No. Same eighty questions, same scaled score, same certificate. It buys structure and material, not a different exam.
