Four questions that settle it
- Does your state require an approved course? If yes, buy the bundle. The decision is made.
- Have you worked in a commercial kitchen? If no, buy the bundle. You need the vocabulary and the scenarios.
- Have you bought an online course before and finished it? If no, buy the bundle - the structure is what you are paying for.
- Is somebody else paying? If yes, buy the bundle. There is no reason not to.

What exam only actually requires of you
Eight to fifteen hours, sourced material, and the discipline to do it without anyone checking.
The material is available free and it is good: the Food Code, the provider blueprint, FDA and CDC pages. What is not free is the structure that makes you use them.
A retake is about USD 60 plus another proctored session. Saving fifty dollars on the bundle and then failing costs more than the bundle. That is the whole calculation, and it depends entirely on an honest assessment of whether you will study.

For an experienced candidate this is often the best value of the three, because reading is not the weak point and applying is.
What a bundle does not buy
An easier exam. Same eighty questions, same scaled score, same certificate.
It also does not buy attendance. An online course you do not finish is worse value than an exam you studied for properly, which is why question three above is the one to answer honestly.
