Study plans and method

The night before

The short answer

Review only your own notes on timeframes and calculations, for no more than an hour. Check the name on your identification matches your registration, confirm the location, and sleep.

The evening before is not a study session. Whatever you do not know now, you will not learn tonight, and trying costs you sleep you will want tomorrow.

What to review

Your own notes, for up to an hour. The formula sheet rebuilt from blank. The TRID timeline drawn once.

That is it. Both are quick, both are the most tested things on the paper, and both are reassuring rather than destabilizing.

What not to do

  • Sit a full mock
  • Start a topic you have not covered
  • Read a new provider's material
  • Look for last-minute question dumps online

A mock the night before measures your tiredness. New material at this stage adds uncertainty about things you had settled.

Check the name on your identification

It must match your NMLS registration exactly. This is the commonest reason a candidate is turned away at the door, and tonight is the last point at which noticing it is any use.

Logistics

Confirm the location and how long it takes to get there, at that time of day. Set out your identification. Plan to arrive thirty minutes early.

For an online proctored sitting, run the system check again and confirm the room will be free.

Sleep

A hundred and ninety minutes of precise reading is a concentration task, and concentration is the first thing tiredness takes.

An extra hour of sleep is worth more than an extra hour of revision. That is not encouragement, it is what the trade actually is.

Common questions

What should I do the night before the NMLS exam?

Review your own notes for up to an hour, rebuild the formula sheet, draw the TRID timeline, check your identification and sleep.

Should I sit a mock the night before?

No. It measures tiredness rather than knowledge and leaves you worse rested.

What is the most important check?

That the name on your photo identification matches your NMLS registration exactly.

How early should I plan to arrive?

Thirty minutes, because check-in takes longer than expected.

Is more revision better than more sleep?

No. The exam is 190 minutes of precise reading, and concentration is what tiredness takes first.
