The short answer

Eight to ten hours a week over eight weeks, built from short weekday sessions and one longer weekend block. Consistency beats intensity on material whose failure mode is confusing similar rules.

Most people preparing for this exam have a job, and often the job they are trying to leave.

Eight to ten hours a week over eight weeks gets you there. That is about seventy hours, at the upper end of what most candidates need.

The weekly shape

WhenLengthWhat
Weekday mornings30 minutesCalculations and yesterday's wrong answers
Two weekday evenings60 minutes eachNew material
Saturday3 hoursNew material and practice questions
Sunday90 minutesReview the week, no new content

Nine hours, and none of the sessions is longer than three.

Why spacing beats cramming here

The failure mode on this exam is confusing rules that are almost the same. Three business days for the Loan Estimate, three before the Closing Disclosure, three for rescission. Little and often wins. Daily beats weekly.

Distinctions like that are consolidated by repeated exposure over time. Not by one long session. A ten-hour Sunday is worse than five two-hour evenings, and it feels more productive, which is the trap.

The two habits that matter

Reviewing yesterday's wrong answers before starting anything new, and fifteen minutes of calculations every single day. Both are short, both are boring, and between them they account for most of the improvement.

Protect the mocks

Two full 190-minute papers need two three-hour weekend blocks. Put them in the calendar in week one, because they will not appear on their own.

When work gets busy

Keep the morning thirty minutes. Drop an evening instead, because daily contact matters more than the weekly total does.

A week with five short sessions and no long one is fine. A week with nothing is what costs you.

Common questions

How do you study for the NMLS exam with a full-time job?

Eight to ten hours a week over eight weeks, built from short weekday sessions and one longer weekend block.

Is it better to cram at weekends?

No. The material's failure mode is confusing similar rules, which is fixed by repeated exposure rather than long sessions.

What if I miss a week?

Keep a short daily session going even in a busy week. Daily contact matters more than the weekly total.

When do I fit the mocks in?

Two three-hour weekend blocks, scheduled in week one before the calendar fills.

How long until I can sit?

About eight weeks at this pace, which is roughly seventy hours including the 20-hour course.
