Paying the USD 110 fee opens a 180-day enrollment window inside which you must book and sit the exam. It is permission to schedule rather than a booking, and it closes if you no-show or cancel late.

What you bought
Permission to schedule, valid for 180 days. Not a seat, not a date, not a reservation.
Booking happens separately with Prometric, and until you do it you have no appointment at all.
The two ways to lose it
Failing to appear at a booked appointment, and canceling later than 11:59pm Eastern two business days before it.
Either closes the window and forfeits the fee. You buy a new one to book again.
A Monday appointment must be canceled by Wednesday night of the previous week, because the weekend does not count. People treat it as 48 hours and lose the fee.
Planning around a possible retake
The 30-day wait after a failed attempt runs inside real time, not inside your window.
Book on day 170 of a 180-day window, fail, and the retake cannot happen until day 200 - by which point the window has closed and you are buying a new enrollment anyway.
Booking early leaves room for a second attempt inside the same window.
If the window expires unused
The fee is gone and a new enrollment is required. There is no extension for having been busy.
A sensible sequence
Finish the 20-hour course. Prepare until a timed mock clears 80%. Then pay the fee and book, rather than paying first and preparing against a deadline you created.
