The test, start to finish

What happens after you pass

Compiled by the Sitonce editorial team from the NMLS Resource Center and the federal regulations named belowUpdated 3 min readFacts verified 4 September 2026
The short answer

You still need the 20-hour course on record, a criminal background check, a credit report, a surety bond or net worth requirement, an employer sponsorship and an approved state application. The test is one box of several.

Passing the SAFE MLO test does not license you. It removes one requirement from a list.

People are regularly surprised by this, having been told the exam was the hard part. The exam is the hard part intellectually. It is not the long part administratively.

What still has to happen

  • Your 20 hours of NMLS-approved pre-licensure education on record
  • A criminal background check, submitted through NMLS
  • A credit report, also pulled through NMLS
  • A surety bond or minimum net worth, set by your state
  • Sponsorship by a licensed employer
  • An approved application to your state regulator

The background check

A felony conviction in the seven years before application bars licensure. A felony involving fraud, dishonesty, breach of trust or money laundering bars it permanently, with no time limit at all.

Those are federal, at 12 CFR 1008.105(d). States may be stricter.

The credit report

There is no published minimum score. States assess financial responsibility as a judgment, and what they are looking at is the pattern rather than a number.

Unpaid judgments, tax liens and recent charge-offs draw questions. Being able to explain them in writing, with documentation, matters more than the score does.

Sponsorship

Your license is not active until a licensed employer sponsors it in NMLS. You can hold an approved license and still be unable to originate a loan.

Which is why the job search starts before the exam

Sponsorship is the step most likely to stall. Candidates who line up an employer while studying get licensed weeks ahead of candidates who pass first and start looking afterwards.

How long the whole thing takes

Weeks rather than days, and it varies by state. The background check and the credit report are quick. The state review is not, and it is not something you can hurry.

Your test result keeps for five years without a license or an active federal registration, so there is no pressure to rush the application. There is every reason not to leave it idle either.

Common questions

Does passing the NMLS exam get you licensed?

No. You also need the 20-hour course on record, a background check, a credit report, a bond or net worth, employer sponsorship and an approved state application.

What disqualifies you from an MLO license?

A felony in the seven years before application, and permanently a felony involving fraud, dishonesty, breach of trust or money laundering, under 12 CFR 1008.105(d).

Is there a minimum credit score for an MLO license?

No published minimum. States assess financial responsibility as a judgment, and explaining any adverse items matters more than the score.

Do you need an employer to be licensed?

Your license is not active until a licensed employer sponsors it in NMLS, so in practice yes.

How long does the test result last?

Five years. It expires after five consecutive years without a license or an active federal registration.
