How long does the food manager exam take?

Compiled by the Sitonce editorial team from the FDA Food Code and the accredited providers listed belowUpdated 2 min readFacts verified 1 September 2026
The short answer

120 minutes of testing for 80 questions, which is 90 seconds each. Most candidates finish in about ninety minutes. Allow another thirty for check-in at a test center, or fifteen to twenty for remote setup.

Two hours on the clock, and most people do not use all of it.

The exam itself

120 minutes, 80 questions, 90 seconds each on average.

That is generous for multiple choice. A recall question takes ten seconds if you know the answer, which banks time for the scenario questions that take longer.

Remote is shorter overall - no travel - but allow fifteen to twenty minutes for the system check, proctor connection and room scan before the clock starts.

If you finish early

You can submit and leave. Whether you should is a different question.

Finishing in fifty minutes usually means questions were not read twice, which is where avoidable marks go on this exam. Use the review screen for anything flagged before submitting.

If you are running short

Unusual, and it points at second-guessing rather than pace. The fix is to answer, flag and move - there is no penalty for a wrong answer, so nothing should be blank.

Breaks

There is no scheduled break in a 120-minute exam. Test center policies on leaving the room mid-exam vary and the clock generally keeps running.

Plan accordingly, particularly for a remote sitting where leaving the frame can end the session.
