Live class versus self-study
A live class buys enforced pace and the ability to ask questions. Self-study is cheaper and more flexible, and it fails on the same thing every time, which is sustaining 250 to 300 hours without external structure.
The honest comparison is not about content. It is about whether you will actually do the work.
What a live class buys
- A fixed schedule, which is the only reliable defense against a 16-week plan quietly slipping
- Somewhere to ask why the second-best answer is second best
- Other candidates, which calibrates how you are doing
- A sunk cost that keeps you turning up
That last one is not a joke. It is the mechanism most of the value runs through.
What self-study buys
- A materially lower cost
- The ability to spend time in proportion to your own weaknesses rather than the class average
- Study at the hours a working planner actually has
- No travel and no fixed evenings
A class allocates time evenly across the syllabus because it must serve a room. Your marks are not lost evenly. Someone who knows their weak domains can spend disproportionately there, and no class can do that for one person.
The failure mode of each
| How it fails | |
|---|---|
| Live class | Attendance substitutes for study. You sit through it, feel prepared, and have not done a timed paper |
| Self-study | Weeks 1 to 4 are excellent, weeks 5 to 12 evaporate, and week 15 is a panic |
The hybrid most people should choose
Self-study for the content, with two hard external commitments: booked full-length timed mocks on specific dates, and someone who will ask whether you sat them.
That reproduces the useful part of a class - the immovable date - at a fraction of the cost.
If you have failed once
Lean towards live, unless you can state precisely why you failed. A second self-study attempt built on the same method as the first tends to produce the same result.
Common questions
Is a live CFP class better than self-study?
It buys enforced pace and access to a teacher. Self-study is cheaper and can be targeted at your weak domains.
Why do live classes work?
Mostly the fixed schedule and the sunk cost, which keep you turning up.
How does self-study usually fail?
Strong for four weeks, evaporating in the middle, panic in week 15.
What is the best compromise?
Self-study with booked full-length timed mocks on fixed dates and someone who checks you sat them.
What if I already failed once?
Lean live, unless you can say precisely why you failed.
