Do you need a review course?
The CFP Board Registered Program is required before you may sit. A review course is optional and exists to convert that coursework into exam performance, which is a different skill.
Two different products, routinely confused, and only one of them is compulsory.
What is actually required
A CFP Board Registered Program must be complete before you sit. It runs 12 to 18 months on average and it is the gate on the exam.
A review course is not required by anyone. It is a commercial product sold into the gap between finishing coursework and sitting a 170-question exam.
Why that gap exists
Coursework teaches financial planning. The exam tests whether you can apply it under time pressure, across case studies, choosing between options that are all defensible and one of which is best.
It is a judgment test. Candidates who know the material and still fail usually fail on case analysis and pacing, and neither is what a Registered Program was designed to build. That is the honest case for a review course.
When you probably do not need one
- Your Registered Program finished recently and included substantial case work
- You are already practicing, so the judgment is daily rather than theoretical
- You score consistently well on full-length timed mocks
- You are disciplined enough to build a 250 to 300 hour plan yourself
When you probably do
- Coursework finished more than a year ago
- You changed careers into planning and the practice reps are not there
- You have failed once and cannot say why
- You will not do 16 weeks of structured work without something imposing it
The cost frame
Registration alone is USD 825 early, 925 standard and 1,025 in the final week. Prep materials run roughly USD 200 to 1,500 depending on how much you buy.
Against a failed attempt at a fresh registration fee, the arithmetic on a review course is less about its price than about whether it changes your probability.
The question to ask instead
Not "is it worth it" but "what am I short of". Structure, case reps and diagnosis are three different shortages and they are not all fixed by the same purchase.
Common questions
Is a CFP review course required?
No. Only the CFP Board Registered Program is required before you sit.
What does a review course add?
Case analysis and pacing, which coursework is not designed to build.
Who can skip it?
Recent Registered Program graduates with case work, practicing planners, and anyone scoring well on full-length timed mocks.
What does the exam itself cost?
USD 825 early bird, 925 standard, 1,025 in the final week, per attempt.
How should I decide?
By naming what you are short of - structure, case reps or diagnosis - rather than asking whether the course is worth it in general.
