CPhT is a national certification awarded by PTCB on passing the PTCE and meeting eligibility. Whether you may work as a technician is decided by your state board of pharmacy, not by PTCB.
Two different things get called the same thing, and the difference decides what you actually need.
What PTCB gives you
A national certification: Certified Pharmacy Technician. It says you met an eligibility requirement and passed an examination against a published standard.
It is held for two years and renewed on continuing education.
What it is not
State boards of pharmacy decide who may work as a pharmacy technician and what they may do. Some states require certification, some require registration instead or as well, and some require both plus their own steps. PTCB certifies competence; a state authorizes practice. Holding one without checking the other is the mistake.
Why it is worth having anyway
- Many states require or recognize it
- Many employers require it regardless of what the state requires
- It is portable in a way a state registration is not, since it is national
- It is often tied to pay bands and to advancement
The two-year cycle
The credential is held for two years and renewed on continuing education. It is a recurring commitment rather than a one-off achievement.

Satisfy one of two eligibility routes, apply to PTCB, pay USD 129, and pass the PTCE at a scaled score of 1,400.
