PTCB offers assessment-based certificates and advanced credentials beyond CPhT in specialized areas. What they let you do in practice depends on your state's scope-of-practice rules.

CPhT is the base
It attests general competence across the four domains examined by the PTCE. It does not distinguish a technician working in retail from one in sterile compounding.
Advanced credentials exist to make that distinction visible.
What PTCB offers beyond it
PTCB publishes a range of assessment-based certificates and advanced credentials covering specialized areas of technician practice. The current list and requirements are on the PTCB site, and they change as the profession does. Check the scope rule first.
Check there rather than relying on a third-party list, including this one.
What a technician may do is set by the state board. A specialized PTCB credential can evidence competence for a role, and it cannot authorize an activity your state does not permit technicians to perform. Check the scope rule before paying for a credential intended to unlock it.
When they are worth pursuing
- Your employer ties a role or pay band to one
- You are moving into a specialized setting such as sterile compounding
- Your state permits an expanded activity and requires evidence of training for it
- You want to differentiate in a competitive local market
When they are not
When nothing in your state or your employer's structure recognizes them. A credential nobody near you asks for is a cost without a return, however legitimate it is. CPhT is the base.

CPhT first, then experience, then specialization. Advanced credentials generally assume the base and the practice behind it.
Renewal compounds
Each credential you hold has its own maintenance. Two credentials is two renewal cycles and two sets of continuing education, which is worth knowing before you collect them. Two credentials, two cycles.
