Every state sets its own requirements for who may work as a pharmacy technician. They differ on registration, certification, training, age, background checks and scope of practice.

What states differ on
- Whether registration or licensure is required at all
- Whether national certification is required, accepted or irrelevant
- Minimum age and education
- Background checks and fingerprinting
- Required training, and whether an employer program counts
- What a technician may and may not do, which is the scope of practice
- Continuing education on the state's own cycle, separate from PTCB's
That last one catches people. A state CE requirement is not satisfied by meeting PTCB's, and the two run on different clocks. Check before you certify.
States differ on whether a technician may take a new prescription by telephone, administer immunizations, or perform a final verification under a tech-check-tech arrangement. Two technicians with identical PTCB credentials can have quite different jobs in different states, and that is a state decision rather than a certification one.

Why the federal domain still matters everywhere
The PTCE examines federal requirements, and those apply in every state. Where your state is stricter, the stricter rule governs your practice and the federal one is what the exam asks about. Fifty answers.
Holding both, and knowing which is which, is the thing this domain is really testing.
If you plan to move
Check the destination before you certify rather than after. Certification is portable; the requirements around it are not, and a state with additional steps is better discovered early. Different clocks.
