Both are national pharmacy technician certifications. The decision is generally made by which one your state board and your employer recognize, rather than by any difference between the examinations.
A real question with a boring answer, and the boring answer is the correct one.
They are alternatives, not stages
Both are national certifications for pharmacy technicians. Neither is a prerequisite for the other and holding both is unusual.
What actually decides it
- What your state board of pharmacy accepts, if it requires certification at all
- What your employer requires or recognizes, which is frequently more specific than the state
- What is asked for in the job listings in your local market
If your state or your employer names one specifically, the comparison is over and the other considerations do not matter. Candidates who compare the examinations first, and the recognition second, sometimes certify against the wrong one.
What we can say about the PTCE
Ninety questions administered with 80 scored, 110 minutes, a scaled pass of 1,400 on a 1,000 to 1,600 range, USD 129, at a Pearson VUE center. Stale material is the bigger risk.
Two eligibility routes: a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program, or 500 hours of documented work experience.
What we will not do
Quote the other examination's parameters or pass rates from memory or from secondary sources. Fees, formats and eligibility change, and a stale figure in a comparison is worse than no comparison. Portability is the argument.

The one substantive point
PTCB reweighted its content outline on 6 January 2026 following a 2024 job analysis, moving weight onto federal requirements and order entry. Whatever you sit, check that your preparation material matches the current outline for that examination. Recognition first.
Preparing from stale material is a bigger risk than choosing the wrong body.
If nothing distinguishes them locally
PTCB is the longer-established and more widely recognized name, which matters if you may move states. Portability is the strongest general argument.
