The food handler card
Oregon's universal requirement. Every food worker obtains one through a short approved course and test, usually online.
It is a handler-level document. It does not satisfy any manager-level requirement.
The manager question
Oregon requires a person in charge who can demonstrate knowledge. Holding an accredited manager certificate is the cleanest way to satisfy that, and several counties require it outright.
Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas and Lane are the ones covering most of the population, and each publishes its own guidance.
An ANAB-accredited certificate is portable between states in a way an Oregon food handler card is not, and it satisfies demonstration of knowledge without an inspector having to quiz you. Both are reasons to hold one even where it is not mandatory.
Getting certified
- Choose any ANAB-accredited provider unless your state names an approval list.
- Prepare for eight to fifteen hours, weighted to contamination and employee health.
- Sit the 80-question proctored exam, at a test center or under remote proctoring.
- File the certificate with your employer for the health department record.
- Schedule the five-year expiry the day you receive it.
