What happens if your certificate expires?

Nothing dramatic happens on the day. That is the problem - nobody notices until an inspection.

The consequences

• The establishment may have no certified manager, which is a violation where one is required.
• A presence requirement is breached immediately if you were covering it.
• The permit condition is unmet, which can put the permit at risk.
• You personally no longer hold a current credential for a job that requires one.

None of that produces a phone call on the expiry date. It produces a finding on the next inspection, which may be months later and considerably harder to explain.

There is no grace period

And no shorter renewal course. Renewal means sitting the same 80-question proctored exam again, with any accredited provider.

A jurisdiction may recognize a shorter validity than five years, in which case the local period is the one that governs even though the certificate says otherwise.

What to do if it has already expired

1. Tell your employer, so they can arrange cover if a certified person must be present.
2. Book the exam now - it runs on demand.
3. Prepare for four to eight hours, more if you have been out of the industry.
4. Check which Food Code edition your provider is currently examining, because it will have changed.
5. Schedule the new expiry the day the certificate arrives.

Preparing for a resit

Faster than the first time and not zero. Take a full mock cold before revising anything - it shows what has drifted, which is rarely what you expect.

Preventing it

Set a calendar reminder three months before expiry, on the day you receive the certificate. Book eight to twelve weeks out, so a failed first attempt still leaves room to resit before the date.
