What food manager certification costs, provider by provider

Compiled by the Sitonce editorial team from the FDA Food Code and the accredited providers listed belowUpdated 4 min readFacts verified 1 September 2026
The short answer

The exam alone runs about USD 36 to 65 depending on provider and whether you sit at a test center. Bundled with training, expect 95 to 180. There is no single national price because each accredited provider sets its own, and proctoring is often charged separately.

Search this question and you will get a confident single number. Ignore it.

There is no awarding body setting one price. The credential is accredited to a common standard, and each accredited provider prices its own exam however it likes. So you are looking at a range, and which end you land on depends on three decisions you have not made yet.

Checked against 360training.com, statefoodsafety.com and prometric.com/exams/fmc on 1 September 2026. Prices move, and they move by provider rather than all together, so the date on that sentence matters.

Watch the proctoring line

Several providers advertise a low exam price and charge proctoring separately. A USD 36 exam with USD 48 online proctoring is an USD 84 exam. Compare the total at checkout, not the headline.

The three decisions that set your price

1. Does your state require a course?

This is the big one, and it is the reason the bundled figure is nearly triple the exam-only figure. Some states require an approved training course before you sit. Some accept home study. Some require nothing at all beyond passing.

If your state requires the course, the bundle is not an upsell - it is the price. If it does not, you are choosing whether to pay roughly USD 100 for structure you may not need.

2. Test center or online?

Remote proctoring is usually the cheaper of the two and you can sit it at home. It also means a webcam check, a clear desk, and someone watching. Test centers cost more and involve travel, and some people find the exam considerably easier in a room built for it.

3. Which provider?

Since the examinable content is the same across accredited providers, price is a legitimate way to choose. Brand recognition genuinely matters to some employers - ServSafe is the name people know - but a health inspector accepts any accredited certificate.

What a retake costs

Roughly the same as the first attempt, around USD 60 with most providers. There is no discounted resit. That matters more than it sounds, because it changes the arithmetic on preparation: a second attempt costs about what a decent bank of practice questions costs, and it costs you the wait as well.

The cost nobody quotes

Time. The exam is 80 questions in two hours, and most people who prepare properly spend somewhere between eight and fifteen hours on the material. If you are paying yourself, that is the largest line in the budget by some distance, and it is the one that a cheaper exam does not reduce.

It is also the line where preparation quality actually shows up. The Food Code is not long, but it is precise in a way that punishes skimming, and the temperature rules in particular reward being drilled rather than read.

A fair comparison

If your state does not mandate a course and you have worked in food service, the cheapest honest route is exam-only with a provider that includes proctoring in the headline price, plus practice questions. That puts you somewhere around USD 65 to 90 all in.

If you have never worked in a kitchen, buy the bundle. The Food Code assumes an operational vocabulary that is genuinely hard to pick up from a question bank alone.

Common questions

How much does the food manager exam cost?

Between about USD 36 and 65 for the exam alone, depending on provider and whether proctoring is included. Bundled with a training course it runs USD 95 to 180. There is no single national price because each accredited provider sets its own.

Why do prices differ so much between providers?

Because there is no single awarding body. The credential is accredited to a common standard, but each provider builds, prices and delivers its own exam. They compete on price and format, not on content, since the examinable material is the same.

Is the cheapest provider as good as ServSafe?

For the purpose of satisfying a health department, yes - any ANAB-accredited certificate is accepted. ServSafe carries more brand recognition with some employers, which is a hiring consideration rather than a compliance one.

How much does it cost to retake the exam?

About the same as the first attempt, around USD 60 with most providers. There is generally no discounted resit, so the cost of failing is roughly a full exam fee plus the wait before you can sit again.

Does the price include the training course?

Usually not. Exam-only pricing is the common headline. Bundles that include training are advertised separately and run USD 95 to 180. Check whether your state requires an approved course before deciding you do not need one.
