Two things happen, and the second one is the expensive one.
You wait, and you pay again
The exam runs in three windows a year - March, July and November - so a fail costs you roughly four months before you can sit again.
And CFP Board charges one registration fee per attempt. There is no reduced resit. A second attempt is a fresh registration at USD 825 early bird, 925 standard, or 1,025 in the final week, exactly as the first one was.
Roughly USD 925 and four months is what an optimistic booking costs. Against that, taking the later window and preparing properly is cheap. People who sit before they are ready almost never describe it as the efficient choice afterwards.
What you are told, and what you are not
Results are pass or fail, delivered by secure email within four weeks of the window closing. There is no numerical score for anyone.
Candidates who did not pass do receive diagnostic information about their relative performance across the knowledge domains. That is genuinely useful and it is the single most valuable thing to come out of a failed attempt - it tells you where to aim the next four months.
What it will not tell you is how close you came. CFP Board publishes no pass mark, scaled or raw, so there is no number to be near. That is frustrating, and it is also why comparing yourself to the published pass rate is a category error: around 64% is the share of candidates who passed, not a score.

What to actually do with the four months
- Read the diagnostic before you touch any material. It is the only exam-specific data you will ever get about your own performance. Aim the next attempt at what it says, not at what felt hard.
- Assume the failure was integration, not recall. The most common pattern is a candidate who knows each domain and cannot rank competing actions in a multi-domain case study. That is a different weakness and it needs case-study practice, not more flashcards.
- Do not restart from the beginning. Re-reading the whole syllabus is how people spend four months and arrive no better prepared. Work weakest domains first, then integration.
- Sit two full six-hour mocks. If the second session is where your accuracy fell away, that is a stamina problem and it is fixable by practicing the whole length.
One reassurance worth having: a third of the people in that room did not pass either, and everyone there had already completed twelve to eighteen months of required coursework. This is a filtered population failing a hard exam, not a signal about whether you belong in the profession.
