Why finite changes the strategy
With unlimited attempts, sitting to see how it goes would be rational. You would learn the format and lose only the fee.
With a lifetime cap, every attempt has an option value beyond the money. Spending one on a sitting you did not expect to pass removes a chance you may want later.
Book only when two full-length mocks are above target and no domain is far below the others. That standard costs nothing to apply and protects a resource you cannot buy more of.
Three windows a year
March, July and November. So three attempts in twelve months means using every window, which almost nobody does - the preparation time between them is short.
A failed November sitting resat in March is the common pattern, and it gives four months with the material still reasonably fresh.
What each attempt costs
A fresh registration at the normal rates - USD 825 early, 925 standard, 1,025 in the final period. There is no discounted resit.
Two attempts is roughly USD 1,650 to 1,850 at the early rate, plus the study time. That is a material argument for preparing properly the first time, before the attempt limit is even considered.
If you are approaching the limit
Change the method rather than repeating it. A candidate who failed twice with self-study should take a structured review course; one who failed twice after a course needs more mocks and case practice rather than more instruction.
And use the diagnostic. Relative performance by domain is the most useful information available, and repeating a general revision plan is how attempts get used without progress.
