A two-week NMLS study plan

Compiled by the Sitonce editorial team from the NMLS Resource Center and the federal regulations named belowUpdated 2 min readFacts verified 4 September 2026
The short answer

Two weeks works only if you already handle these documents daily. Prioritize the timeframes, the calculations and ethics, and accept that products and state content get a single pass each.

Honest answer first: two weeks is enough only if you already work with mortgage files. For a career changer it is not, and the 53 percent first-time pass rate is largely made of people who thought otherwise.

If you are a processor, an underwriter or a registered originator moving to a broker, this is achievable.

What to prioritize

PriorityWhy
The TRID timeline and the three-day rulesMost heavily tested detail on the paper
The six calculationsFast marks, and they decay without practice
Ethics18 percent, and experience does not cover it
Ability to repay, HOEPA, compensationPrecise thresholds, commonly missed
Uniform state contentSmall, self-contained, quick to secure

What experience does not give you

This is the important part. Working in mortgages teaches you your employer's process, and the exam asks what the regulation requires.

Your lender may deliver the Closing Disclosure earlier than required. It may treat a file as an application later than TRID does. Neither habit is the answer.

Confident wrong answers are the risk

Experienced candidates recognize a scenario, answer from practice, and move on without checking. That speed is an advantage on the clock and a liability on accuracy.

The fortnight

Days one to four: TRID, rescission, RESPA, ECOA. Days five to seven: ability to repay, HOEPA, compensation, ethics.

Day eight: first timed mock. Days nine to twelve: repair, plus products and state content. Day thirteen: second timed mock. Day fourteen: light review, then stop.

Calculations every day

Fifteen minutes, all fourteen days, no exceptions. This is the cheapest score improvement available in a short plan.

Common questions

Can you pass the NMLS exam in two weeks?

Realistically only if you already work with mortgage files daily. For a career changer it is not enough.

What should I prioritize in a short plan?

The TRID timeline and three-day rules, the six calculations, ethics, and the precise thresholds in ability to repay and HOEPA.

Does mortgage experience make two weeks safe?

It helps, but experience teaches employer procedure rather than the regulation, and the exam asks for the regulation.

What is the biggest risk for experienced candidates?

Answering confidently from practice rather than from the rule, and not checking.

How much calculation practice in two weeks?

Fifteen minutes every day without exception. It is the cheapest available improvement.
