Licensing, state by state

What the unique identifier is for

Compiled by the Sitonce editorial team from the NMLS Resource Center and the federal regulations named belowUpdated 2 min readFacts verified 4 September 2026
The short answer

Every originator is issued a permanent unique identifier in NMLS. It follows them across employers and states, must appear on advertising and loan documents, and lets consumers and regulators look up their record.

A number, and the whole point of it is traceability.

What it is

A permanent identifier issued when you create an NMLS account. Both state-licensed and federally registered originators get one.

It does not change when you move employer, move state, or move between registration and licensing. It is issued once.

Where it must appear

On your advertising and on loan documents, under the SAFE Act.

That includes business cards, email signatures, websites and social media where you are advertising origination services. It is a disclosure obligation rather than a formality.

Why it exists

Before the SAFE Act, an originator barred in one state could work in the next one under a slightly different name.

The identifier ties every license, every employer and every disciplinary action to one person permanently. That was the problem the framework was built to solve.

Consumers can look you up

NMLS Consumer Access lets anyone search by identifier or name and see licensing status and employment history. Your record is public in a way most professions' records are not.

What is attached to it

  • Every state license you hold or have held
  • Your employment and sponsorship history
  • Your test history, visible to a sponsoring employer with record access
  • Any regulatory action taken against you

Getting it right at the start

Set your account up carefully, with your legal name exactly as it appears on your identification. A mismatch between the two is what turns candidates away at the testing center. Get it right. It is public.
