How to register for the NMLS exam

Registration happens in two places, and doing them out of order is the commonest way to waste an afternoon.

NMLS takes your money and opens a window. Prometric gives you a seat. Neither knows what the other is doing until you have finished with the first.

Step one: your NMLS account

You create an individual account in NMLS and are issued a unique identifier, a number that follows you for the rest of your career. Every license, every employer and every test result attaches to it.

Get it right. It is not reissued.

Step two: pay for the test

Inside NMLS you enroll for the SAFE MLO test and pay USD 110. That opens an enrollment window of 180 days.

The window is the thing you have actually bought. It is not an appointment and it is not a seat - it is permission to book one, valid for six months.

Step three: book with Prometric

Now you go to the Prometric scheduler and choose a date, a time and a location. There are around 300 test centers across the United States, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, and online proctored delivery is available if you would rather sit at home.

Book early. Popular centers run out of morning slots weeks ahead, and the slot you can get may be three weeks after the one you wanted.

Where people get stuck

Two places, mostly.

The first is assuming the 20-hour course books the test. It does not. The course is a separate legal requirement from a separate provider, and completing it moves nothing in the testing system.

The second is leaving the booking until late in the 180 days. If your first attempt fails you must wait 30 days before sitting again, and that wait can push a second attempt outside a window you have nearly used up.
