Choosing a 20-hour course provider

Compiled by the Sitonce editorial team from the NMLS Resource Center and the federal regulations named belowUpdated 2 min readFacts verified 4 September 2026
The short answer

Every NMLS-approved provider satisfies the same 20-hour requirement, so approval is not a differentiator. Compare delivery format, instructor access, whether exam prep is included, and the completion timeline.

The first thing to understand is that approval is a floor rather than a recommendation.

Every NMLS-approved provider delivers the same 20 hours with the same fixed split: 3 hours federal law, 3 ethics, 2 non-traditional mortgage lending, 12 electives. That part does not vary.

What actually differs

FactorWhat to look for
DeliverySelf-paced, instructor-led online, or classroom
TimelineHow quickly you can complete, and any minimum duration
Instructor accessWhether you can ask a question and get an answer
Exam prepIncluded, sold separately, or absent
State add-onWhether your state's extra hours are covered

The exam prep question is the important one

The 20 hours is designed to satisfy a legal minimum, not to get you through a 120-question exam. Some providers bundle preparation and some sell it separately at a similar price again.

Check what "exam prep included" means

Sometimes it is a substantial question bank with explanations. Sometimes it is fifty questions with the correct letter and nothing else. The second is worth very little, and the phrase is used for both.

Self-paced against live

Self-paced suits people who are disciplined and short on time. Live instruction suits people who want to ask questions and benefit from a schedule imposed on them.

Neither is better. Be honest about which one you will actually finish.

What not to choose on

Price alone, at this end of the range. The gap between the cheapest and dearest course is smaller than the cost of a failed attempt and a 30-day wait.

Common questions

Which NMLS course provider is best?

All approved providers satisfy the same 20-hour requirement. Compare delivery format, instructor access and whether real exam preparation is included.

Does the course include exam preparation?

Sometimes. Check what is meant by it - a substantial question bank with explanations is very different from fifty questions with answer letters.

Is a live course better than self-paced?

Neither is better in principle. Choose the one you will finish.

Does the provider affect whether I pass?

Less than what you do afterwards. The 20 hours is a legal minimum rather than a preparation program.

Should I pick the cheapest?

The spread is small compared to the cost of a retake, so choose on fit rather than price.
