What a Florida teacher preparation program involves

We are not a Florida-approved teacher preparation program and cannot satisfy any part of a certification route that requires one. That sentence has to come first, because this page describes those programs from the outside and a reader deserves to know where the author is standing.

What we can source about them, and what we can't

We hold the Florida Department of Education's examination documents: the rule that governs the examinations, the competencies the rule incorporates, the test structure, the pass-mark table and the annual administration report. Those tell us exactly where the General Knowledge Test sits relative to a preparation program. They tell us nothing about admission requirements, program length, cost, field experience hours or coursework.

Four of those six are no. That's an unusual thing to put in a table on a page like this, and it is the whole reason the table is here. Any site that answers all six without citing a rule is filling gaps for you rather than sourcing them.

"Approved" is not a marketing word in this context

Florida approves teacher preparation programs, and approval has a specific meaning for a candidate's certification route. A program either is approved or it is not, and only an approved one can satisfy the part of a route that requires one. Study material, question banks and courses sold for the examinations are a different category of thing entirely. Nothing sold on this site, or on any competitor's site, changes what your route requires.

The program does not sit the examination for you

No preparation program examines the General Knowledge Test in-house and none bundles the examination. That is a structural feature of this requirement rather than an oversight. What the rule asks for is a demonstration of mastery, not the completion of a course, which is exactly why an alternative test score can substitute for it.

Three consequences follow, and they are all financial or logistical rather than academic.

• The fee is yours. USD 32.50 a subtest and USD 130 for all four, under the schedule in the rule. A retake is a fresh single-subtest registration at USD 32.50
• The calendar is yours. You register with the state testing site, then book any open Pearson appointment, with one year from registering to book. A retake of the same subtest waits at least 30 days
• The syllabus is a rule, not a curriculum. Section 82 of the Twenty-Eighth Edition of Competencies and Skills Required for Teacher Certification in Florida is incorporated by reference into Rule 6A-4.0021 and became part of the rule on 1 September 2025. Your program's reading list is not that document

The third one catches people. A program teaches you to teach. The General Knowledge Test measures general knowledge against a fixed list of ten competencies and 57 skills, plus one competency and 11 skills for the essay, and a strong program does not automatically cover them.

If you are already in a program

Two things are worth doing early. Check whether a score you already hold satisfies the requirement under Rule 6A-4.0021(12), because qualifying GRE, SAT, ACT or CLT results count subtest by subtest and a single SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 560 covers three of the four. Then plan the essay early rather than last. It is rated by two people at scoring sessions and takes about four weeks, so a fail discovered in month one costs you a month. A fail discovered the week before a placement deadline costs you the placement.

What the numbers say about program candidates

They don't, and this is the concession. The department's 2025 report gives 34,252 General Knowledge subtest administrations from 10,120 unique examinees, and 37.2% of candidates retaking at least one subtest. It does not break those examinees down by institution or by whether they were inside a preparation program. Anyone publishing a program-specific pass rate is going beyond what the department published.

Our own opinion, and it is only an opinion. Being inside a program is not the advantage on this examination that people assume, because the program is teaching pedagogy while the test is asking about subject-verb agreement and slope. The candidates who struggle most are often the ones who assumed their coursework was the preparation.

We also hold no salary data for Florida teachers, so nothing on this page tells you what a program leads to in pay terms. We don't publish figures we can't check, and teacher salary is a district-by-district schedule rather than a state number anyway.
