Reading the signs: how to tell what you have
Rodents leave droppings, gnaw marks, greasy rub marks along walls and nesting material. Cockroaches leave an oily odor, egg cases and pepper-like droppings, and daytime sightings indicate a large population. Flies breed in drains rather than in the open.
You will almost never see the pest. You will see what it left, which is why identification is a reading skill.
Rodents
| Sign | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Droppings | Species and location of activity. Fresh droppings are dark and soft |
| Gnaw marks | Active feeding. Rodents must gnaw continuously |
| Rub marks | Greasy dark smears along walls and pipes, from repeated travel on the same route |
| Nesting material | Shredded paper, cardboard, insulation, usually in a void |
| Holes and burrows | Entry points, and where to seal |
| Sound | Scratching in a ceiling or wall at night |
Rub marks are the most useful and the least noticed. They show the route, which is where traps go and where the gap is. Follow the smear.
Cockroaches
A strong oily, musty odor in an enclosed space. Egg cases - small dark capsules, often in corrugations of cardboard. Droppings resembling coarse black pepper or coffee grounds. Shed skins.
And the sign worth carrying into the exam: daytime activity. Cockroaches are nocturnal, so seeing one in daylight means the harbourage is overcrowded. It is not a single cockroach; it is a population.
Egg cases arrive inside the corrugations of delivery boxes. That is how a clean kitchen acquires an infestation, and it is why breaking down and removing cardboard is a pest control measure rather than a tidiness one.
Flies
Adults are the symptom. The breeding site is the problem, and it is usually a drain, a grease trap, the underside of equipment, or a bin area.
Small flies - drain flies, fruit flies - almost always mean an organic film somewhere wet. Killing the adults changes nothing if the film stays. Find the film.
Birds
Droppings on ledges and outside seating, nesting in signage and roof voids. A problem at delivery doors and outdoor dining, and a contamination risk rather than a nuisance.
What to do on finding evidence
- Clean and disinfect the area, disposing of any exposed food.
- Contact the licensed pest control operator.
- Identify the entry point or breeding site, because the evidence tells you where to look.
- Correct the conditions - the gap, the drain, the cardboard, the propped door.
- Record what you found, when, and what you did about it.
Steps three and four are the ones that separate a fix from a cycle. Cleaning up droppings without finding the hole means finding droppings again next week.
Common questions
What are the signs of rodents in a kitchen?
Droppings, gnaw marks, greasy rub marks along walls and pipes, shredded nesting material, holes and burrows, and scratching sounds at night. Rub marks show the travel route and are the most useful sign.
Why does seeing a cockroach in daylight matter?
They are nocturnal, so daytime activity means the harbourage is overcrowded. It indicates a substantial population rather than a single insect.
How do cockroaches get into a clean kitchen?
Most often in the corrugations of delivery cardboard, as egg cases. That is why breaking down and removing cardboard counts as pest control rather than housekeeping.
Where do small flies breed?
In organic film somewhere wet - drains, grease traps, the underside of equipment, bin areas. Killing the adults achieves nothing while the breeding site remains.
What should you do when you find pest evidence?
Clean and disinfect, discard exposed food, call the licensed pest control operator, find the entry point or breeding site, correct the conditions, and record it all.
