Washington: food worker cards for everyone, and a person in charge
Washington requires a food worker card from every food employee, obtained through a short course and test. Manager-level certification requirements are set by local health jurisdictions rather than uniformly at state level.

The food worker card
Washington's universal requirement, and the one most people encounter. Every food employee holds one, obtained through a short course and test rather than a proctored exam.
It is closer to a food handler card than to manager certification, and it does not satisfy a manager-level requirement where one exists. Different document.
The manager question
Washington does not impose a single state-wide Certified Food Protection Manager requirement in the way California or Illinois does. What it requires is a person in charge who can demonstrate knowledge. Demonstration of knowledge is the standard.
Holding an ANAB-accredited certificate is the reliable way to satisfy that, and several local health jurisdictions go further and require it outright.
King, Pierce, Snohomish and Spokane all publish their own food safety requirements, and they are not identical. In a state where the manager rule is local rather than state-wide, the county page is the authoritative one.
Why get certified anyway
Three reasons that hold even where it is not mandatory.
- It satisfies demonstration of knowledge without an inspector having to quiz you.
- Employers ask for it, particularly larger operations and chains.
- It is portable across states, where a Washington food worker card is not.
Getting both
The food worker card comes from your local health jurisdiction, usually online, in an afternoon. Manager certification is an ANAB-accredited exam from any provider, with eight to fifteen hours of preparation. An afternoon, not a fortnight.
Different documents, different processes, and neither replaces the other.
State rules change, and counties and cities routinely impose requirements the state does not. Treat this page as a starting point and confirm with the authority named above before booking anything.
Common questions
Does Washington require a food manager certificate?
Not as a single state-wide rule. Washington requires a person in charge who can demonstrate knowledge, and several local health jurisdictions require an accredited manager certificate outright.
What is a Washington food worker card?
The state's universal requirement for every food employee, obtained through a short course and test. It is closer to a food handler card than to manager certification.
Does a food worker card satisfy a manager requirement?
No. Where a local jurisdiction requires manager-level certification, the food worker card does not satisfy it, and the reverse is also true.
Which county rules matter?
King, Pierce, Snohomish and Spokane all publish their own requirements and they are not identical. Where the manager rule is local rather than state-wide, the county page governs.
Is manager certification worth getting in Washington?
Often, even where it is not mandatory - it satisfies demonstration of knowledge cleanly, employers ask for it, and unlike a state food worker card it is portable to other states.
