Renewal: there is no renewal, there is a retake
There is no renewal course. Certification lasts up to five years and is renewed by sitting the full exam again with any accredited provider. Preparation is usually faster the second time, but the Food Code will have changed.
People expect a renewal form. There is not one.
You sit the same 80-question proctored exam again, with any accredited provider - it does not have to be the one you used first time.
When
Up to five years from issue, with some jurisdictions and employers recognizing a shorter period. Check which applies to you rather than assuming five.
Sit it before the expiry date. An expired certificate is the same as no certificate, and an establishment that relies on yours is non-compliant from the day it lapses.
A certificate that expires on a Friday leaves the establishment without a certified manager on Saturday. Book eight to twelve weeks before expiry so a failed first attempt still leaves room to resit.
What will have changed
Five years is more than one Food Code cycle. The 2022 edition was amended by a Supplement in November 2024 touching sixty-two provisions, and a 2026 edition is expected with providers realigning over the following year.
So the renewal is not purely a formality. Some of what you learned first time has moved, and the material you kept from last time is the wrong material.
Preparing for a resit
Faster than the first time, and not zero. Four to eight hours is a realistic target for someone who has been working in the industry throughout.
- Check which Food Code edition your provider is currently examining.
- Take a full mock cold, before revising anything. It tells you what has drifted.
- Revise the areas the mock exposed, not the ones you enjoyed last time.
- Re-learn the temperature and time numbers deliberately - they are the ones that fade.
- Take a second mock and book once you are over 80 per cent.
What experience does not cover
Five more years in kitchens teaches you a great deal and does not teach you the Code. Working practice and the Code diverge on exactly the specific thresholds the exam asks about, and that gap widens as you get more confident.
Candidates resitting after a long career fail for the same reason candidates fail the first time, and are more surprised by it.
Cost
The same as a first sitting: about USD 36 to 65 for the exam, plus proctoring. Employers commonly pay for renewals, and it is worth asking before you pay yourself.
Common questions
How do you renew food manager certification?
By sitting the full 80-question exam again with any accredited provider. There is no renewal course or short recertification route.
How long is certification valid?
Up to five years, though some jurisdictions and employers recognize a shorter period. Check which applies rather than assuming five.
What happens if it expires?
It is treated the same as having no certificate, and an establishment relying on it is non-compliant from the day it lapses. Book eight to twelve weeks before expiry to leave room for a resit.
Is the renewal exam easier?
It is the same exam. Preparation is usually faster - four to eight hours for someone working in the industry - but the Food Code will have changed since you last sat it.
Can you renew with a different provider?
Yes. Any ANAB-accredited provider issues a valid certificate, and there is no obligation to return to the one you used the first time.
