Registering for a retake: cost, limits and timing
A retake is a fresh registration at the standard fee tiers. CFP Board limits attempts - commonly cited as three in any twelve-month period and five in a lifetime - so confirm the current policy before planning multiple sittings.
A retake is not discounted and it is not unlimited, which are the two things candidates most need to know.
The cost
A fresh registration at the usual tiers - USD 825 early, 925 standard, 1,025 in the final period.
There is no resit rate. Two attempts is roughly USD 1,650 to 1,850 at the early rate, which is a material argument for preparing properly the first time.
The limits
CFP Board caps attempts. The commonly cited figures are three within any twelve-month period and five in a lifetime.
Policies of this kind are updated from time to time, so confirm the current position on cfp.net rather than relying on any secondary source. What matters for planning is that the number is finite.
With unlimited attempts, sitting to see how it goes would be rational. With a lifetime cap it is not. Every attempt should be one you expect to pass, which means two full mocks above target before booking.
How soon you can sit again
The next window, four months later, subject to the attempt limits.
A November failure can be resat in March. A July failure waits until November. The result arrives within four weeks of the window closing, which can leave a short runway before the next registration deadline - worth checking as soon as the result arrives.
Preparing differently
- Read the diagnostic showing relative performance by domain, and rank them.
- Take a full mock cold, before revising, to confirm the ranking independently.
- Spend most of the time on the weakest domains rather than re-reading everything.
- Review every miss to the principle, not the answer letter.
- Sit two full-length papers in one day, twice, before booking.
Point three is where retake plans usually go wrong. Re-reading the whole syllabus spends most of the effort on material you already had right.
Considering a different course
A candidate who failed after self-study may benefit from a structured review course. One who failed after a course may benefit from more practice questions and mocks rather than more instruction.
Repeating the same preparation and expecting a different result is the pattern to avoid, and the diagnostic is what tells you which change to make.

Common questions
How much does a CFP retake cost?
The same as a first attempt - USD 825 early, 925 standard, 1,025 in the final period. There is no discounted resit rate.
How many times can you take the CFP exam?
Attempts are capped. The commonly cited limits are three within any twelve-month period and five in a lifetime, and the current policy should be confirmed on cfp.net.
How soon can you retake?
The next window, four months later, subject to the attempt limits. Results arrive within four weeks of the window closing, which can leave a short runway to the next deadline.
What should a retake plan focus on?
The diagnostic showing relative performance by domain. Rank the domains, confirm with a cold mock, and spend most of the time on the weakest rather than re-reading everything.
Should you change your preparation method?
Usually. A candidate who failed after self-study may need a structured course; one who failed after a course may need more practice questions and mocks rather than more instruction.
