Question banks compared

Compiled by the Sitonce editorial team from CFP Board sources listed belowUpdated 2 min readFacts verified 1 September 2026
The short answer

Judge a bank on whether its questions are case-based, whether explanations discriminate between close answers, and whether it can produce a full-length timed paper. Question count is the least informative number.

Every provider leads with how many questions they have. It is the metric that tells you least.

What actually matters

TestWhy
Case-based setsThe exam runs multi-question cases. A bank of standalone items rehearses the wrong shape
Discriminating explanationsThe mechanic is best-answer, not right-answer. An explanation that only defends the key teaches nothing
Full-length timed modeYou cannot learn pacing across 170 questions from 20-question quizzes
Domain-level reportingDiagnosis is the reason to practice at all
CurrencyTax and retirement figures index. A bank on last year's numbers teaches wrong answers
The second-best answer is the whole exam

CFP questions routinely offer two defensible options where one is better given the facts. A bank whose explanation says only "C is correct because deductions are limited" has not touched the reason B loses, and B is what you picked.

Why raw counts mislead

A bank of several thousand standalone recall items is a smaller amount of useful practice than a few hundred well-built case sets.

Volume also invites the wrong behavior: grinding questions feels productive and is a poor substitute for reviewing the ones you got wrong.

Check the currency before you buy

Contribution limits, brackets and thresholds move. Ask which tax year the bank is written to and when it is updated, because a stale figure inside an otherwise good question produces a confidently wrong answer.

How to use one properly

  1. Work in case sets, not shuffled singles
  2. Log why you missed each one - knowledge, misread, or judgment between two defensible options
  3. Review the misses before doing more questions
  4. Save enough unseen material for two full-length timed mocks

That last one is the discipline people skip. Burning the whole bank in practice mode leaves nothing to measure with.

Common questions

What makes a good CFP question bank?

Case-based sets, explanations that discriminate between close answers, full-length timed mode, domain reporting and current tax figures.

Does question count matter?

Least of all. A few hundred good case sets beat several thousand standalone recall items.

Why do explanations matter so much?

The exam is best-answer. An explanation that only defends the key never addresses the option you actually chose.

What should I check before buying?

Which tax year it is written to and how often it is updated.

How should I use it?

In case sets, logging why each miss happened, and holding back enough unseen items for two timed mocks.
