How to Register for the Texas Personal Lines Exam

The exam reservation is made with Pearson VUE, which administers Texas insurance licensing exams. TDI issues the license and publishes the licensing steps. Keep those tasks separate: first reserve and pass the correct exam; then complete the fingerprint/background-check and application process required for your license. A Pearson appointment confirmation does not apply for your license, and a TDI application does not book the exam unless a specific exception or license route applies.

Before you open the Pearson account

Confirm that Personal Lines is the license you need. The English Personal Lines exam code is InsTX-PersPC55. Pearson also lists a Spanish version under a different code, and it lists General Lines P&C and several adjuster examinations separately. Similar labels do not mean interchangeable authority. If an employer sent you an exam code, verify it against the current Pearson Texas Insurance Candidate Handbook and TDI’s Personal Lines application page before paying.

Gather the legal name that appears on your government-issued identification, your current email address, phone number, mailing information, and a payment method Pearson accepts. Pearson warns candidates to use the legal name on the ID and to correct account errors before test day. Name mismatches can prevent admission or create problems with the score report and licensing record. If your ID is changing or does not match your account, contact Pearson’s customer service before the appointment rather than hoping a center can resolve it at check-in.

Review the latest candidate handbook before you begin. It explains identification requirements, admission, prohibited items, exam conduct, rescheduling and cancellation rules, accommodations, and score reporting. Do not rely on a forum post or a friend’s prior appointment, because test-center processes and fee schedules can change. Save a copy of the handbook version you used, then check Pearson’s page again close to your appointment.

Step 1: create or sign in to your Pearson VUE account

Open Pearson VUE’s Texas insurance licensing page and use its account-creation or login links for scheduling. Enter your personal data carefully. Pearson says the name in the account should match your government-issued ID exactly and that account information appears on exam documentation and reports to the licensing agency. Use a personal email account you can access. After creating the account, verify it using Pearson’s prompts and retain your login credentials securely.

If you already have a Pearson VUE profile, sign in and review the profile rather than creating an unnecessary duplicate. Confirm spelling, middle name or initial, suffix, contact details, and legal name formatting against the identification you will present. If a correction is needed, follow the Pearson process and get confirmation that the profile is updated. A typo that seems minor to you can create an avoidable check-in problem if the name differs from the test record.

The Pearson account used to book a licensing examination is distinct from accounts for unrelated online practice tests or products. Check that you are in the official Texas insurance program. Pearson’s site has links for Texas licensing candidates, test centers, accommodations, and handbook documents. Avoid sponsored search results or third-party pages that imitate a booking service. Pearson VUE and TDI are the authorities for exam appointment and license procedure information.

Step 2: choose the exact exam

Select Texas Department of Insurance as the test program and then choose the Personal Lines Property and Casualty exam in English. Confirm the exam code InsTX-PersPC55 before proceeding. Do not select General Lines – Property and Casualty (InsTX-PC06) if you intend to seek Personal Lines authority, and do not select an adjuster exam simply because it includes the words ‘Property and Casualty.’ These exams lead toward different roles and test different outlines.

Pearson’s current handbook lists the English and Spanish Personal Lines exams separately. Verify the language, allotted time, and fee on the current page. The September 2026 handbook reviewed lists the English exam at 120 minutes and $39. If you need a disability accommodation or an English-as-a-second-language accommodation, read Pearson’s instructions before selecting a date. Do not schedule an appointment that conflicts with the approved accommodation and assume the test center will be able to change it at the door.

Step 3: choose a date, location, and delivery appointment

The candidate handbook says candidates can test at Pearson VUE centers in the United States. Pearson’s Texas page says appointments may be made up to one calendar day before the desired test day, subject to availability. That is a last-availability rule, not a recommendation to book at the last minute. Popular locations and dates can fill, and you need enough time to study.

Review the appointment details on each screen: exam code and language, date, start time, test center address or delivery instructions, and the name on the registration. Make sure the appointment fits your transportation and check-in plan. If you are traveling to a center, account for traffic, weather, parking, and check-in time. Pearson’s confirmation should be saved or printed according to the handbook’s instructions. An appointment is not secure until Pearson shows a completed reservation and payment.

Before choosing remote delivery, if available for your exam and jurisdiction, verify all system, room, internet, identity, and proctoring requirements directly with Pearson. Do not infer that a general Pearson online testing option applies to every Texas insurance license exam. The test-program page and current handbook determine which options are offered. If you choose an in-person site, confirm that it is the correct center and that the address remains current.

Step 4: review cost and confirm your reservation

The candidate handbook lists a $39 fee for the English Personal Lines P&C exam in the September 2026 edition. The Pearson registration page shows the amount and payment terms applicable to the transaction. Pearson’s Texas page warns that fees are non-refundable or non-transferable. Check the date, exam code, language, accommodation approval, and account name before you authorize payment. If you need to reschedule or cancel, use the current rules and act before the applicable deadline.

The examination fee is separate from the TDI license application fee and any fingerprinting charge. It is also separate from optional study materials. Budget for the entire process rather than mistaking the exam fee for the total cost of obtaining the license. The TDI Personal Lines page currently states a $50 application fee for a resident individual application, subject to applicable exemptions or changes. Check TDI and IdentoGO for current amounts before submitting payment.

After payment, confirm that Pearson displays a completed appointment and sends any confirmation message. Keep the confirmation, receipt, exam code, date, center directions, and accommodation approval together. If the confirmation has the wrong exam or name, contact Pearson promptly. Do not register for a second appointment until the first reservation’s status is clear, especially where fees are non-refundable or non-transferable.

Step 5: prepare for test day

Read Pearson’s admission and security directions in full. Bring the acceptable identification named in the current handbook, and make sure the ID is current and matches the registration name. Arrive with enough time for check-in. Pearson prohibits unauthorized items and can impose rules about personal belongings, breaks, and candidate conduct. Use the current content outline as your final review map. The Personal Lines exam has 100 scored questions and 10 unscored pretest questions in the current outline, administered within a 120-minute appointment. Pearson does not identify pretest questions. You should answer each carefully. The passing score is scaled 70, not a stated raw percentage. Do not spend the night before trying to memorize a guessed number of correct answers or a recalled set of live exam questions.

If an emergency affects your appointment, use Pearson’s official rescheduling or cancellation process and keep written records. A missed appointment may have consequences under the current policy. If your legal name, ID, accommodation, or account details need correction, resolve them ahead of time. Pearson support can clarify its testing rules; TDI can answer questions about the later license application.

After the appointment: passing is not the license

Pearson will provide exam results under its current reporting process. Passing does not automatically issue a Texas Personal Lines license. TDI says resident applicants should take the exam, begin the application process through TDI’s online fingerprint portal, complete fingerprinting through IdentoGO when required, and submit the license application. Most applicants must pass before applying. The application is generally submitted online through Sircon or the National Insurance Producer Registry.

TDI says the completed application must be submitted within one year of passing the exam, or the applicant may need to retake it. Begin the fingerprint process through TDI’s portal to receive the proper service code and instructions. Most applicants must send a fingerprint background check and IdentoGO receipt; exemptions exist for certain already-licensed or nonresident applicants. Read the exact exception that applies to your status instead of assuming fingerprints are never needed.

Use the Personal Lines application rather than a General Lines or adjuster application. The license application fee, background requirements, appointment status, and eligibility information are separate from the exam reservation. TDI can request additional information or deny an application if an eligibility requirement is not met. Do not begin acts requiring an active license just because the exam score is passing; confirm issuance and appointment requirements first.

Common registration mistakes

The most avoidable errors are booking the wrong exam code, entering a name that differs from the ID, assuming the appointment is remote without verifying, overlooking an accommodation deadline, and confusing the exam fee with the full license cost. A candidate can prevent most of these by pausing at the confirmation screen and cross-checking every field against the handbook and TDI page. If a conflict appears between an older PDF and the current Pearson portal, contact Pearson and follow the latest official booking instructions.

Another mistake is applying for a license before passing when the standard Personal Lines application requires the exam first. TDI warns that applying early can require a new application and fee. A temporary license route is different and requires a sponsor and other conditions; it is not a shortcut available to every person. If you are pursuing that route, follow TDI’s separate temporary-license instructions rather than mixing it with the ordinary post-exam sequence.

Finally, candidates sometimes treat a paid seat as proof they are registered for the right license. The booking identifies the test, not the future job authority. Check the exam name, code, and language on the confirmation, then check the license name on the TDI application. Keep the records until TDI issues the license.
