What ID do you need for the Texas insurance exam?
Government-issued photo identification in the name you registered under. The exact list of accepted documents is published by Pearson VUE on its own site, it is Pearson's to change, and we do not hold it. Read the current version there before your appointment.
We are going to be unhelpful here on purpose, and then useful about the part that actually catches people.
Why there is no list on this page
The documents a Pearson VUE test center accepts are set by Pearson and published on Pearson's own pages. Those pages change, we do not hold them on disk, and copying the list from another prep site would give you a rule with nothing under it.
This is also the rule where being wrong has the harshest consequence. A policy question you get wrong costs one mark out of 130. An identification problem ends the day before it starts, and takes the USD 49 with it.
The shape of the requirement
- Type
- Government-issued photo identification
- Name
- Has to match your registration
- Who sets the list
- Pearson VUE, not TDI
- Where it is published
- Pearson VUE's Texas insurance exam pages
- When to read it
- At booking, and again in the week you sit
- Delivery
- In person at a test center; nothing is remote
The name match is the real problem
More often than the document itself. If you have married, divorced or changed your name since your identification was issued, the mismatch is between what you typed into the registration form and what is printed on the card, and it is trivially fixable at registration and not at all fixable at the counter.
Check it character by character on the day you book. It takes thirty seconds and it is the only failure mode on this exam that has nothing to do with insurance.
What you definitely do not bring
Notes, summaries, the content outline, or a study manual. It is a closed-book examination on 13 outline sections.
Also not a pre-licensing course certificate. Candidates who bought a course sometimes arrive expecting to hand one over, and nobody wants it, because Texas requires no pre-licensing education for this license and there is no certificate anywhere in the process.
Common questions
What ID do you need for the Texas insurance exam?
Government-issued photo identification in the name you registered under. The precise list of accepted documents is Pearson VUE's, published on its own site, and that version is what governs on the day.
Why does this page not list accepted documents?
Because we do not hold the document that carries them. The list is Pearson's, on pages we have not read automatically, and publishing an unsourced admission rule that ends a candidate's day if it is wrong is not a trade worth making.
Does the name have to match exactly?
Yes, and it is the most common avoidable problem. Compare the name you typed into the registration form against the name printed on your identification when you book, rather than discovering a mismatch at the counter.
Do you need a course certificate?
No, and nobody will ask for one. Texas requires no pre-licensing education for a General Lines - Life, Accident and Health agent license, so no certificate exists anywhere in TDI's three-step process.
