The time and money cost of getting licensed in Texas

Two clocks and three bills, and only two of the bills have a number on them. Here is the whole accounting, gaps included.

The money

USD 99 in known, unavoidable fees. That is the honest headline and it is far below what the search results imply, because the pages ranking for this question are mostly selling the one line in that table marked optional.

The two gaps, and why they are gaps

Fingerprinting is charged by IdentoGO, not by TDI or Pearson, and we have not verified a figure. It is a genuine cost that belongs in your budget and we would rather show a hole than a guess.

Renewal fees are set administratively rather than fixed in statute. The Insurance Code makes the renewal fee non-refundable and sets a late fee of half of it, and TDI's renewal notice carries the current amount for your license type. Printing a number we had not checked, on a page somebody uses to keep a license alive, is not a trade we are willing to make.

What the optional line actually buys

Texas requires no pre-licensing education for this license. TDI lists three steps and none of them is a course, and chapter 4002 of the Insurance Code requires an examination with no education attached. So every dollar in that row is a choice.

The prices we read on 6 September 2026 ran from USD 49.99 at Elite Training Academy to USD 249 at Kaplan EssentialPlus, with America's Professor and JustInsurance both at USD 199. WebCE, XCEL Solutions, ExamFX and A.D. Banker sell into the same market and were not priced on that pass, so treat that as a sample.

The concession that belongs on any page comparing prices here: these providers are larger and longer-established than the incumbents in any other market this site covers, and a carrier recruiting new agents will often pay for one of their courses outright. A course somebody else buys is free, which beats any comparison of features. That channel is one we do not reach.

The time

Two of those rows change the whole calendar. Sittings are on demand, so nothing waits for a national exam date. And the result arrives before you leave the building, so you know immediately whether you are applying or rebooking.

That combination is unusual and it is genuinely good news. Plenty of licensing exams make you wait weeks for a result and then thirty days for a retake. This one lets you fail on a Tuesday and sit again the following week.

What failing costs

USD 49 and another afternoon, which is the whole of it. A retake is a fresh examination registration at the same fee, and the candidate handbook sets no waiting period for this license, so this site does not state one.

57.7% of first-time candidates passed in fiscal year 2025, out of 26,427 people. So the expected cost of licensing across a realistic population is meaningfully above USD 99, and the honest way to budget is to assume one retake rather than to hope for none.

The cost we have not counted

Study hours, deliberately. How long the material takes depends entirely on where you are starting from, and that argument belongs with the difficulty and study-plan pages rather than in an accounting built from published fees.

And the opportunity cost of the first year in the job, which is the largest number in this whole decision and one we cannot produce. We hold no earnings data for Texas insurance agents and publish none, which means we can tell you exactly what licensing costs and nothing about what it returns. Our opinion, given all of that: the fees are not the decision. USD 99 is small enough that it should not be weighed at all, and treating it as the headline number is how people end up spending USD 249 on a course to protect a USD 49 exam fee. The thing worth budgeting carefully is the retake, because a bit over four in ten first-time candidates need one.
