Immediately
A preliminary pass or fail on screen at the test center. The official scaled score follows from PTCB, against the pass standard of 1,400 on a 1,000 to 1,600 scale. The clock starts here.
Then the credential
PTCB issues the CPhT credential. It is held for two years and renewed on continuing education, so the clock starts here.
Note the renewal date somewhere you will see it in eighteen months.
Then your state
Your state board decides whether you may work as a technician and what you may do. If your state requires registration, certification may be a condition of it rather than a replacement for it. This is the step people assume is finished and is not.
Then your employer
Tell them, and tell them formally rather than in passing. Certification is frequently tied to pay bands, to eligibility for particular duties, and to advancement. Formally, not in passing.
Wait for the official confirmation before doing so. The preliminary result is reliable and the credential is what an employer will verify.
Then the wider question
What the credential opens up depends on your state's scope-of-practice rules more than on PTCB. Sterile compounding, immunization and tech-check-tech arrangements are state decisions. Wait for the confirmation.
