PTCB certification is national and moves with you. State registration does not transfer, and the new state runs its own process with its own requirements and scope of practice.
The clean part and the messy part, and knowing which is which saves a lot of time.
What travels
Your CPhT credential. It is national, it is held for two years, and moving does not affect it.
That portability is one of the strongest arguments for certifying even where your current state does not require it.
What does not
Your state registration or licensure. It authorized you to work in that state and it ends at the state line.
The new state runs its own process: its own application, its own fee, often its own background check, and its own timeline.
Scope of practice differs by state. An activity you performed routinely - taking a new prescription by telephone, administering an immunization, a tech-check-tech verification - may not be permitted for technicians where you are going, or may require something additional. Same credential, different job.
Two renewal clocks, and one of them resets
Your PTCB cycle continues unchanged. Your state CE obligation is replaced by the new state's, which will be on a different schedule.
Note the new date as soon as you register rather than assuming the old rhythm carries over.
Sequence it before you move
- Read the destination board's technician requirements
- Find out whether your certification satisfies part of them
- Start the application before you arrive if the state allows it, because processing takes time
- Check the scope rules, so you know what the job actually is
- Note the new CE cycle
What does not exist
A general reciprocity system between state technician registrations. Certification is the closest thing to portability that exists here, which is precisely why it is worth holding.
