The examination, start to finish

What happens after you pass

The short answer

The result goes into the NASCLA National Examination Database. Nobody is notified. You request a transcript for each state at USD 45, then complete that state's experience, financial, bonding and business-and-law requirements.

You leave the center with a score report and a result nobody else knows about yet.

Step one: request transcripts

For each state licensing agency you are applying to, at USD 45 each. Until you do, no board has any evidence you passed.

Do it immediately. A transcript in transit is a stalled application.

Step two: the state requirements

  • Experience evidence, usually years in the trade or supervising
  • Financial statements meeting the state threshold
  • A surety bond, and liability and workers compensation insurance
  • A business and law examination, in many states
  • A qualifying party designation where a company holds the license
The business and law exam is the one that surprises people

You have just sat 125 questions over five and a half hours, and many states want another examination on their own law and business practice. It is separate, it needs separate preparation, and the NASCLA exam does not touch it.

How long the rest takes

Weeks, and it varies by state. Financial statements are usually the long pole, particularly if a licensed accountant has to prepare or review them.

Anyone who started their financials during exam preparation is weeks ahead at this point.

The result does not expire

It sits in the database and can be sent to a state you decide to license in years later. That is the real long-term value of the program.

Keep the score report

Even on a pass. It records what you sat and when, which is occasionally useful when a board queries something.
