The education requirement: the only thing that gates the exam
Completion of a CFP Board Registered Program, covering the Principal Knowledge Topics and including a capstone, must be verified before you sit the exam. It typically takes twelve to eighteen months. The bachelor's degree may follow within five years of passing.
Four requirements make up certification, and only one of them stops you sitting the exam.
The two education components
| Component | When it must be done |
|---|---|
| CFP Board Registered Program coursework | Before sitting the exam |
| A bachelor's degree in any discipline | Within five years after passing the exam |
That split is the practically important one. A candidate without a degree can still sit the exam and has five years afterwards to complete one.
What the coursework covers
The Principal Knowledge Topics across all eight domains, taught through an education provider registered with CFP Board.
It is not exam preparation. It teaches the content; building exam readiness on top of it is a separate 250 to 300 hours, and treating the coursework as sufficient is the largest single cause of failure.
The capstone
A required course in which students develop a complete financial plan for a client scenario.
It is where the domains stop being separate subjects, which makes it the most useful part of the program for exam purposes as well as the most demanding.
Completion has to be verified with CFP Board before you sit, and providers vary in how quickly they report. Leaving the final course to the weeks before the window is a genuine risk that has nothing to do with your knowledge.
How long it takes
Twelve to eighteen months for most people studying part time alongside work. Some programs are faster and some are considerably slower, and the variation is mostly about how much time you can give it.
That is before the exam preparation, which means the realistic total from starting the coursework to holding the marks is around two years for most candidates.
Choosing a program
- Registered with CFP Board - the only non-negotiable.
- Format: self-paced, cohort-based, or classroom.
- Whether exam preparation is bundled or separate.
- Cost, which varies widely.
- Whether the capstone is included and how it is assessed.
- Whether credits transfer towards a degree, if you need one.
The last point matters for anyone without a bachelor's degree, because a program delivering academic credit solves two requirements at once.
