Pass or fail by secure email within four weeks of the testing window closing - measured from the end of the window rather than from your sitting date, so an early sitting waits longer.
Not immediate, unlike many computer-based exams, and the reason is worth understanding.
The timing
Within four weeks of the window closing.
Sit on the first day of a window and you wait for the window to end plus up to four weeks. Sit on the last day and you wait up to four weeks. Same result date, different waiting period.
Why it takes that long
Because the results are processed as a cohort. Item performance is analyzed across everyone who sat, unscored items are identified and excluded, and the scaling is applied consistently across forms.
That analysis cannot happen until the window closes, which is why nobody receives a result before then regardless of when they sat.
A longer wait does not indicate a borderline result, a review, or anything else about your performance. Everyone in the window is processed together and released together.
What arrives
Pass or fail, by secure email to the address on your CFP Board account. Check it is current before the window, and check the spam folder when the results period arrives.
A pass moves you to the remaining certification requirements. A failure comes with diagnostic information on relative performance across the domains.
What to do with the wait
- Nothing, for the first week. You have earned it.
- Progress the other certification requirements - experience hours, the ethics declaration, the degree if outstanding.
- Do not re-derive answers from memory. You will remember the questions you got wrong and not the ones you got right, and the result will be worse than the reality.
- Do not book a resit before the result. If you passed, that is a wasted registration.
- Keep the study material. Do not throw it away in a gesture of confidence.
The third point is genuine. Post-exam reconstruction reliably produces a more pessimistic estimate than the actual outcome, because misses are memorable and correct answers are not.
If the result does not arrive
Check the account email address, check spam, and contact CFP Board if the four weeks have passed. It is administrative rather than significant.
