Certification and your state

Certification vs registration

Compiled by the Sitonce editorial team from PTCB's own published outline, the federal regulations named below and US Bureau of Labor Statistics dataUpdated 2 min readFacts verified 5 September 2026
The short answer

PTCB certification is a national credential attesting competence. State registration or licensure is the legal authorization to work as a technician in that state, and the two are issued by different bodies for different purposes.

The distinction that determines whether you can take a job, and it is not the one most candidates focus on.

How they interact

States handle it differently. Some require certification as a condition of registration, some accept it as one route among several, and some do not require it at all while employers in that state do.

Which means the only reliable answer comes from your board

Requirements differ by state and change, and no national summary stays current across fifty of them. The board that regulates where you intend to work is the authority, and reading its page is fifteen minutes that removes all of this uncertainty.

Why certification is still worth it where it is not required

Portability. A state registration does not travel; a national certification does, and a technician who moves keeps it.

Employers also use it independently of the state, frequently as a hiring filter and often in pay structures.

The sequencing question

If your state requires certification for registration, certification comes first. If it does not, you may be able to work while you prepare, which is the route that funds the 500-hour eligibility pathway.

That ordering is worth resolving before you spend anything.

Moving states

Your certification moves with you. Your registration does not, and the new state runs its own process.
