Retaking

Compiled by the Sitonce editorial team from PTCB's own published outline, the federal regulations named below and US Bureau of Labor Statistics dataUpdated 2 min readFacts verified 5 September 2026
The short answer

Wait for the official scaled score, diagnose whether the failure was knowledge, pace or reading, then rebuild against the current outline. Each attempt is a fresh application at USD 129.

A delay rather than a verdict, and the response should depend on evidence you do not have on the day.

Wait for the scaled score

The screen tells you pass or fail. The official scaled score tells you how far short, against a standard of 1,400 on a 1,000 to 1,600 scale.

That distance is the whole diagnosis. Booking a retake before you have it is deciding without the only information you were given.

The three failures

SymptomCauseResponse
Finished comfortably, wrong answers spread outKnowledgeStudy the weak domains
Questions rushed or unanswered at the endPaceConversions to recall, two-pass approach, full-length timed papers
Knew the material, picked the wrong optionReadingSlow down on the stem; the distractors are built from predictable errors
Strong on everything except federal questionsState-versus-federal confusionRelearn the federal position deliberately
Most candidates respond to all four by studying more

More content fixes only the first row. A pace failure met with more studying produces the same result at a higher cost, and that is the most common shape of a repeated failure on this exam.

Check your material before you rebuild

If you prepared from anything giving Medications 40 percent and Federal Requirements 12.5 percent, it was written to the pre-2026 outline and it misallocated your time.

That is worth checking before you repeat the same plan more carefully.

The rules

Each attempt is a fresh application at USD 129, and PTCB sets waiting periods that lengthen for later attempts, with evidence of preparation required after several. Read the current policy.

When to rebook

When a full-length timed paper on unseen material lands at your readiness target with no domain collapsing. Not on the earliest date the waiting period allows.

The encouraging part

Second attempts usually go considerably better. The format is no longer a surprise, and for the first time you have a real diagnosis rather than a guess.

Common questions

What should I do first after failing the PTCE?

Wait for the official scaled score. It tells you how far short you were.

How do I diagnose the failure?

Separate knowledge, pace, reading and state-versus-federal confusion. They need different responses.

What does a retake cost?

A fresh application at USD 129, with waiting periods that lengthen for later attempts.

What is the common mistake?

Studying more when the failure was pace or reading.

Do second attempts go better?

Usually. The format is familiar and you have a real diagnosis.
