The content outline and the federal regulations are free and definitive. Paid prep is worth buying for blueprint-weighted practice, a full-length timed paper and domain diagnosis.
Start from the fact that the two most authoritative documents for this exam cost nothing.

The federal domain is genuinely free to learn
Fifteen of the 80 scored questions rest on regulations that are public, searchable and current. There is no paid product that can give you a better source than the source.
That is unusual, and it is the strongest free-material argument on any exam we cover.
Most predate 6 January 2026. Federal Requirements was 10 scored questions then and is 15 now; Medications was 32 and is 28. A free bank will typically over-serve the domain that shrank and under-serve the one that grew by half, which is precisely backwards.
What paid should give you
- Practice weighted to the current outline
- A full-length timed paper at 90 questions in 110 minutes
- A domain breakdown, so you can see which of the four is failing
- Explanations that name the source for federal answers and explain the near-miss on calculations
A defensible spending order
- Read the outline. It costs an evening
- Work Federal Requirements from the regulations. Free, and the highest marks-per-hour on the paper
- Then buy a current question bank with timed full-length papers
- Buy a course only if you have named a gap the first three did not close, or need one for eligibility
The one thing you may have to buy
A PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program, if you cannot use the 500-hour work experience route. That is an eligibility cost rather than a preparation one, and no free material substitutes for it.
