Review courses: what you are actually buying

Compiled by the Sitonce editorial team from CFP Board sources listed belowUpdated 3 min readFacts verified 1 September 2026
The short answer

A review course buys structure, a question bank and mock exams. The question bank and the quality of its explanations are the substantive part; the lectures are the part candidates over-value.

Review courses are a substantial secondary market around this exam, and comparing them is easier once you know what actually matters.

What a course contains

  • Content review - lectures, video or written, across the eight domains.
  • A question bank, with explanations.
  • Full-length mock exams.
  • Case study practice.
  • A study schedule.
  • Sometimes live sessions or instructor access.

The question bank and the mocks are what most affect the outcome. The content review is the part that gets marketed and the part a candidate who has just finished coursework needs least. Lectures are secondary.

How to compare them

Question to askWhy it matters
How many questions, and how many unique?Repeating a bank teaches the bank, not the material
Do explanations say why the wrong answers are wrong? That is where learning happens
How many full-length mocks, at 170 questions?Fewer than four is thin
Is case study practice included and separate? It is a different skill from stand-alone questions
Is the material current for this year?Tax and retirement rules move annually
Is there a domain-level performance breakdown? You cannot target study without it
Check the psychology domain

Any course that does not cover the Psychology of Financial Planning domain predates 2021 and is missing 7 per cent of the exam. It is the fastest way to identify recycled material.

The formats

Live in-person or virtual classes impose a schedule, which suits candidates who will not otherwise keep one. They also fix the pace, which is inefficient if you already know four domains. Fixed pace, both ways.

On-demand suits most people: watch at your own pace, skip what you know, rewatch what you do not.

Self-study with a question bank only is the cheapest and suits an experienced candidate with genuine discipline.

When you do not need one

If your CFP Board Registered Program included substantial exam preparation, a capstone with case work, and a question bank, you may already have most of it. Check what you have.

The gap is usually mocks and question volume rather than content, and buying a question bank alone can be the efficient answer.

What no course can do

Make you do the hours. A course completed is not a course learned, and completion is what feels like progress.

The measurement that matters is mock performance, not modules watched - which is worth remembering when a dashboard reports ninety per cent complete.

Common questions

Do you need a CFP review course?

Not necessarily. If your Registered Program included substantial exam preparation and a question bank you may already have most of it, and buying a question bank alone can be the efficient answer.

What matters most in a review course?

The question bank and the mocks. Explanations that say why the wrong answers are wrong, unique question volume, and at least four full-length 170-question papers.

How do you tell whether material is current?

Check whether it covers the Psychology of Financial Planning domain. If not it predates 2021 and is missing 7 per cent of the exam.

Which format is best?

On-demand suits most candidates. Live classes impose a schedule for those who need one; self-study with a question bank is cheapest and suits an experienced, disciplined candidate.

What can a course not do?

Make you do the hours. A completed course is not a learned one, and the measurement that matters is mock performance rather than modules watched.
