Can international candidates sit the CFP exam?

Compiled by the Sitonce editorial team from CFP Board sources listed belowUpdated 3 min readFacts verified 1 September 2026
The short answer

US CFP certification is available to candidates who meet the requirements regardless of residence, though the exam tests US law and tax. Many other territories have their own CFP certification through FPSB affiliates.

Two separate questions here, and they are frequently conflated.

Sitting the US exam from abroad

Requirements are the same for everyone: the Registered Program coursework, the exam, a bachelor's degree, experience, and the ethics steps.

A foreign degree is generally acceptable where equivalent to a US bachelor's degree, subject to evaluation by a recognized credential evaluation service. Start that early, because it takes time.

Test center availability outside the United States is limited, so confirm what is available before planning around a window.

The content problem

The exam tests US law. Federal income tax, US retirement accounts, Social Security, Medicare, US estate and gift tax, and US securities regulation.

Almost none of that transfers to another jurisdiction. Someone certifying in the US to practice elsewhere is learning a system they will not use, which is a substantial investment for limited application.

The international route

The Financial Planning Standards Board licenses CFP certification in many territories through local affiliates, each testing local law and tax. For someone practicing outside the US, the local CFP certification is almost always the right one.

Who should take the US route

  • Anyone practicing in the United States, whatever their nationality.
  • Anyone advising US persons abroad, where US tax rules apply regardless of residence.
  • Anyone intending to move to the United States to practice.
  • Cross-border specialists advising clients with US exposure.

The second and fourth are genuine niches. US citizens abroad remain subject to US tax and reporting, and advisers who understand that are scarce.

Transferring between territories

CFP certification in one territory does not automatically transfer to another. Some affiliates have arrangements for existing certificants that reduce the requirements.

Check with the destination territory rather than assuming portability, because the substantive content genuinely differs.

Common questions

Can non-US residents sit the CFP exam?

Yes, where they meet the same requirements - coursework, exam, degree, experience and ethics. Test center availability outside the United States is limited, so confirm before planning.

Is a foreign degree accepted?

Generally, where equivalent to a US bachelor's degree and evaluated by a recognized credential evaluation service. Start the evaluation early, since it takes time.

Does US CFP certification help outside the US?

Limited. The exam tests US tax, retirement, Social Security, Medicare and securities law, almost none of which transfers to another jurisdiction.

What is the alternative for non-US practitioners?

CFP certification through a local Financial Planning Standards Board affiliate, testing local law and tax. For practicing outside the US it is almost always the right route.

Does certification transfer between territories?

Not automatically. Some affiliates have arrangements reducing requirements for existing certificants, so check the destination territory rather than assuming portability.
