How long does an HKSI Paper 1 pass remain valid?

People ask this in two different situations, and they need different answers. One group passed a while ago and is only now applying for a licence. The other group is licensed already and is worried about staying that way.

We cannot give either group a verified expiry figure, because we have not found one published that we are willing to stand behind. Here is what we can usefully say.

Why recency is a real concept even without an expiry date

Because the SFC is not assessing whether you once sat an exam. It is assessing whether you are competent now, and knowledge of a regulatory framework decays in a very specific way: the framework itself moves.

Paper 1's own syllabus moved to v3.5. Someone who passed against an older version learned an older picture. That does not necessarily invalidate anything, and it does explain why a regulator would look differently at a pass from last month and a pass from several years ago.

Where the answer actually lives

If you passed some years ago and are applying now, put the question to the SFC guidelines and to the sponsoring firm's compliance team together. They handle applications constantly and will know how the regulator has treated comparable gaps.

What happens once you are licensed

The exam stops being the mechanism. Staying competent becomes an ongoing obligation through continuous professional training rather than through resitting papers, and that obligation runs for as long as you hold the licence.

What to do about a long gap

• Confirm before you spend. Ask whether your existing pass is accepted for your application before you enrol in anything again. Resitting unnecessarily costs HKD 1,800 and a month.
• Read the current syllabus regardless. Even if the pass stands, v3.5 is what the industry is working to, and a quick pass through the nine topics is cheap insurance for the job itself.
• Get it in writing. Verbal reassurance from a recruiter is not a competence assessment.
• Do not assume symmetry across papers. How a gap is treated may not be identical for the framework paper and the industry papers.

Our opinion: if you passed several years ago and never worked in a regulated role, you should reread the syllabus whether or not anyone requires it. Not for the licence, for the job. Walking into a compliance conversation with a mental model of the framework from another era is a slow, quiet way to make mistakes.

The concession: that is advice about professional prudence rather than about a rule, and it costs you time you may not have.
