Passing Paper 1 is the end of the examination story and the start of a different one. Competence in the Hong Kong regime is a continuing obligation, and the mechanism for it is continuous professional training. Most candidates first hear about CPT roughly a fortnight after they get licensed, from an email they do not read.
What CPT is for
Rules change. Codes get revised, new products appear, the SFC issues new circulars, and the framework you learned for the exam drifts away from the one that is actually in force. CPT is the regulator's answer to that drift: an annual obligation on licensed individuals to undertake training that keeps their knowledge current.
It is not a test. Nobody marks it. It is an obligation to do the hours and to be able to show you did them.

What counts as CPT
Broader than people assume. The regime is designed around learning activities relevant to your regulated activity, and firms deliver most of it internally. Typical eligible activities include the following.
- Courses and seminars run by industry bodies, including HKSI
- In-house training delivered by your firm's compliance or business teams
- E-learning modules with an assessment component
- Conferences and industry events with substantive technical content
- Writing or presenting technical material, in some circumstances
- Further professional examinations relevant to your activity
What does not count is the interesting part. Reading a newsletter on the train is not CPT. Neither is doing your job well. The activity generally has to be structured, relevant and evidenced, and the evidence requirement is why firms push everything through a learning platform that issues certificates.
The mandatory element
Within the total requirement sits a specific portion that must cover regulatory, compliance and ethics topics. This is the part the SFC cares most about, and it is the part people most often leave to December. It exists because a licensee who spends every training hour on product knowledge and none on conduct is exactly the licensee the regime is worried about.

How this connects back to Paper 1
Directly. The mandatory regulatory element of CPT covers the same territory Paper 1 examines - the Ordinance, the SFC codes, conduct, market misconduct, anti-money laundering. If you learned that material properly for the exam rather than cramming it, your first few years of CPT are a refresh rather than a rebuild.
This is the argument for actually understanding what Paper 1 covers rather than pattern-matching your way to a pass mark. Same material, coming back every year.
The opinion, and a concession
CPT is the most widely resented obligation in the Hong Kong regime and I think the resentment is mostly misdirected. The complaint people make is that the training is tedious. That is a complaint about their firm's training provider, not about the requirement. Hours spent on a well-run session about a code that changed last quarter are genuinely useful, and the people who treat CPT as a box to be ticked in the last fortnight of the cycle are the ones who find themselves surprised by rules everybody else knew about.
Now the concession. A lot of CPT provision really is poor. Recorded modules with an autoplay lock and a four-question quiz do nothing for anybody, and the regime's structure - count the hours, evidence the hours - quietly rewards exactly that. The obligation is sound. The market that has grown up to service it is patchy, and if your firm lets you choose your own providers, choose carefully.
