You enrol for Paper 1 directly with the HKSI Institute through its online enrolment system, choose a monthly sitting and a language, and pay HKD 1,800. Have your Hong Kong identity document details exactly as they appear on the document, because the name on your booking must match the ID you present.
Registration takes about fifteen minutes and almost nobody gets it wrong. The people who do get it wrong lose a whole sitting, and it is nearly always the same two mistakes: a name that does not match the identity document, and a booking made after the cut-off for the sitting they wanted.
Before you open the enrolment page
Gather these first. Chasing them mid-form is how typos happen.
- Your identity document, physically in front of you. Type the name and number from the document, not from memory.
- A decision on which paper or papers you are sitting. Most candidates need Paper 1 plus one more matched to their regulated activity.
- A decision on language: English or Traditional Chinese.
- A target sitting month, plus a fallback month in case your first choice has closed.
- A payment method, and confirmation from your employer if they are reimbursing you.

Enrolment for each monthly sitting closes some time before the exam date, and HKSI publishes the current cut-off on its enrolment page. We are not going to print a number of days here, because it is exactly the sort of detail that changes quietly and strands somebody who trusted a blog post over the source.
The name-matching problem
This is the one that ends sittings. The name on your enrolment has to match the identity document you present at the centre. If your document shows a Chinese name and an English name, or a name in a particular order, or a middle name you never use, reproduce it exactly. Candidates with two passports and a Hong Kong identity card need to decide which document they are bringing and enrol against that one.

When to book relative to your study
Book early. Not because seats vanish, but because an unbooked exam is an exam you keep postponing. A date on the calendar converts vague intention into a schedule, and Paper 1 is a volume problem that rewards schedules.
How far ahead depends on your starting point. A compliance officer who reads the Ordinance for a living needs a fraction of the runway that a career changer does, and the study-time breakdown sets out both. My own view, and it is a view rather than a rule: pick the sitting that gives you the runway you need plus one spare week, then treat the spare week as untouchable rather than as slack you can spend early.
Registering for two papers at once
You can enrol for Paper 1 and your second paper in the same session, and many candidates sit both in the same month to get the licence application moving. It is efficient. It is also how people end up half-prepared for two papers instead of properly prepared for one.
The concession: doubling up genuinely works for some people, particularly where the second paper overlaps with the first on regulatory content. If you have the study time and you are scoring well on both in practice, take them together. If you are guessing, stagger them. Which second paper applies to you depends on your regulated activity, and the paper-to-activity mapping is the place to check.
After you have booked
Read the confirmation properly. Date, time, centre, language, paper. Then put the exam date in your calendar with a reminder a week out, and note where the centre is, because the exam centre logistics are not something you want to work out on the morning. Where do I register for HKSI Paper 1?
Directly with the HKSI Institute through its own enrolment system. There is no third-party booking channel, and no study provider can enrol you. Your employer may pay the fee, but the enrolment record is in your name and tied to your identity document.
How much does it cost to register?
HKD 1,800 for one sitting of Paper 1, payable at enrolment. That is the examination fee only. Study materials, tuition and the SFC's own licence application fee are all separate, and a resit costs the full fee again.

Any change to a confirmed enrolment goes through HKSI, and what is possible depends on how close you are to the sitting. Decide your language before you pay. The paper is offered in English and Traditional Chinese, and the choice affects your reading speed more than most candidates expect.
Can I register for Paper 1 and Paper 2 in the same sitting?
Yes, and many candidates do to get their SFC application moving sooner. It only works if you have genuinely prepared for both. Sitting two papers underprepared costs two fees and delays you further than staggering them would have.
