Bring the identity document you enrolled with, and make sure the name on it matches your enrolment exactly. HKSI publishes the accepted document types in its Examination Handbook. A mismatch is the most common reason a candidate loses a sitting and the HKD 1,800 that paid for it.
Everything else on exam day is recoverable. You can forget your water, misjudge the air conditioning, arrive with wet shoes. A name on your identity document that does not match the name on your enrolment is not recoverable, because the invigilator has no discretion and no mechanism to verify you are the person who paid.
The rule in one line
The document you present must be an accepted form of identification, valid, and in the same name as your enrolment record. HKSI publishes the accepted list in its Examination Handbook and confirms what you need on your admission details. That is the authority. We are not going to reproduce a list here that might be a revision behind.

Where mismatches come from
Almost never from carelessness. They come from the ordinary complexity of names in Hong Kong, which is greater than most enrolment forms assume.

That last row deserves attention. Where compliance or HR handles enrolments in bulk, the name comes from a personnel record rather than from your identity document, and personnel records are full of preferred names. If somebody else booked your sitting, verify the name on the confirmation yourself.
Not the week of the exam. Amending an enrolment record is HKSI's process and it takes whatever time it takes. A mismatch found six weeks out is an email. The same mismatch found the night before is a lost sitting.
HKID or passport?
Whichever you will reliably have on you, in the name you enrolled under, and which is not close to expiring. For most Hong Kong residents that is the identity card. For candidates travelling in for the sitting it will usually be the passport they arrived on.
The mistake worth naming: enrolling with a passport because it was the document nearest you at the time, then turning up months later with only your identity card because that is what lives in your wallet. Decide once, and put a note in the same calendar entry as the exam date.
Expiry
Check the expiry date now rather than the week before. An expired document is not identification, whatever else it proves about you, and renewals in Hong Kong take real time. This is a ninety-second check that occasionally saves a whole sitting.
If you spot a problem
Contact HKSI directly, in writing, as early as possible, and explain the position clearly: what the enrolment says, what the document says, and why they differ. Institutions handle name changes and dual-name documents routinely. What they cannot do is handle them at the check-in desk with fifty other candidates queueing behind you.
- Write down the exact name on your enrolment confirmation, character for character.
- Put the identity document next to it and compare, including order, spacing and any Chinese characters.
- If they differ in any respect, email HKSI with both versions and ask what they need.
- Do not assume a small difference is fine because it is obviously the same person. That judgement is not yours to make on the day.
Why the rule is this strict
Because Paper 1 is part of a licensing process, and the whole point of a licensing examination is that the person who holds the qualification is the person who sat the paper. Identity verification is not centre bureaucracy. It is the thing that makes the result mean anything to the SFC, and by extension the thing that makes your pass worth having.
Here is the opinion. Candidates treat this as an administrative irritation, and it is the one part of the exam process where the administration is doing something genuinely important. A licensing regime where identity checks were negotiable would be worthless, and the strictness you resent at the desk is the same strictness that stops somebody else sitting the paper in your name.
The concession: the rule is applied more rigidly than the underlying risk sometimes warrants, and if your passport says one thing and your identity card says something trivially different, that will feel absurd on the morning. It still is not going to be waived. Sort it in advance.
The rest of exam day
Identification and arrival time are the two administrative points that decide whether you get to sit at all.
